Length Comparator
A Length Comparator is a precision instrument used to measure changes of hardened cement, mortar and concrete specimens. Users can switch measurement units from inches to millimeters by pressing a button. It’s a must have in the construction and materials testing industry, allowing users to measure dimensional changes of various materials under different conditions. By pressing a button, users can switch units effortlessly. The Length Comparator meets industry standards, ASTM and AASHTO specs, for accurate and reliable measurements. Measurement units can be switched between inches and millimeters for user convenience and precision. Digital can be zeroed at any point on its measurement range for flexibility in measurements of different sample lengths. For professionals working with concrete prismatic specimens, hardened cement mortar and other mortar and concrete materials, this is a critical tool to get changes and stability data.
Key Components and Features
The Length Comparator has several key components that work together to measure. These are:
-
Stationary and Movable Anvils: Fit Gauge Studs cast into test specimens, these anvils ensure secure and accurate positioning. Stationary and movable anvils are designed to enhance precision and adaptability.
-
Movable Anvils Designed: These anvils are integral components that accommodate gauge studs cast into test specimens, ensuring precise measurements and compliance with various industry standards.
-
Upright Support: Sturdy upright support attached to a solid triangular base, this support is stable and consistent.
-
Nut Collar: Part of the elevating screw and anvil assembly, the nut collar is important for the assembly’s functionality and repair.
-
Screw: The assembly includes screw components for proper functioning and adjustments.* Stationary Anvils: Accommodates different gage studs for precise length change measurement in concrete and cement paste specimens.
-
Invar Reference Bar: For zeroing dial or digital indicator.
-
Digital Indicator or Dial Indicator: Measure length, auto On/Off and unit conversion.
-
Anvil Assembly: Can accommodate test specimens up to 4” x 4” (102 x 102mm) cross-section, versatile for various testing needs.
-
Additional Calibration Anvils: For maintaining the accuracy of Concrete Test Hammer, ASTM C805, the use of a Calibration Test Anvil for Rebound Hammer is crucial after every 1,000 to 2,000 impacts.
A Length Comparator measures changes of hardened cement, mortar and concrete prismatic specimens, so a must have for testing and quality control in the construction industry.
Measurement Procedure
The measurement process with a Length Comparator involves:
-
Prepare Test Specimen: Cast gauge studs into the ends of the specimen so it’s ready to measure.
-
Set up Length Comparator: Attach test specimen to stationary and movable anvils, which are designed to receive the reference pins cast into the ends of the test specimen bars so it fits securely.
-
Zero Indicator: Zero the digital or dial indicator with the Invar reference bar so it can be zeroed at any point on the range so you have a baseline for measurement.
-
Measure Changes: The Length Comparator measures the changes of the test specimen so you get accurate readings.
-
Record Data: Record and analyze the measurement data to get dimensional changes of the test specimen so you get material performance data.
Applications and Advantages
The Length Comparator is used in the construction industry for:
-
Testing and Quality Control: To check the quality and stability of cement paste, mortar and concrete prismatic specimens.
-
