Thermocouple, Type J, Ungrounded Junction, 3/16" OD, 18", with Male Plug

Thermocouples are one of the most versatile and widely-used devices for temperature measurement across a vast range of industrial, commercial, and scientific applications. Their popularity stems from their simple design, durability, and ability to function over a broad spectrum of temperatures.

How Does a Thermocouple Work?

The operation of a thermocouple is based on the Seebeck effect. It consists of two wires made from different metals joined together at one end to form a measuring junction, often called the "hot" junction. This is the end that is placed in the environment where the temperature needs to be measured. The opposite ends of the wires are connected to a temperature controller or reader, forming the reference junction.

When the measuring junction is exposed to heat, a temperature gradient is created along the wires. This gradient generates a small thermoelectric voltage, or Electromotive Force (EMF), which is proportional to the temperature difference between the measuring junction and the reference junction. This voltage is then measured by the instrumentation, which interprets the signal and converts it into a precise temperature reading (e.g., °C or °F).

Temperature Range and Types

By carefully selecting specific combinations of metals, thermocouples can be engineered to measure an extremely wide range of temperatures, from as low as -200 °C (-328 °F) for cryogenic applications to over 2316 °C (4200 °F) for processes involving molten metals and furnaces. Different "types" of thermocouples (such as Type J, K, T, E, etc.) use standardized metal pairings to provide predictable outputs and suit different temperature ranges and chemical environments.

Pyromation's Thermocouple Solutions

Pyromation is a leading manufacturer of thermocouples designed to meet the demands of nearly any market application. Our extensive product line includes:

  • MgO (Magnesium Oxide) Insulated Thermocouples: These are rugged, bendable, and ideal for high-vibration or high-pressure environments.
  • Industrial Thermocouples: Designed for heavy-duty process applications, often used with protective connection heads and thermowells.
  • General-Purpose Thermocouples: Versatile and cost-effective solutions for a wide array of common temperature sensing needs.
  • Specialized Assemblies: We also engineer thermocouple assemblies for hazardous locations (explosion-proof) and other complex applications that require integrated components like connection heads, protection tubes, thermowells, and signal transmitters.
Pyromation Thermocouple, Type J, Ung. Junction, 3/16in OD, 18in, Male Plug, four thermocouples with metal sensing tips and insulated plugs for temperature measurement in industrial applications.
