What is a Thermocouple?

Thermocouples are among the most common, versatile, and cost-effective devices used for temperature measurement across a vast range of industrial, commercial, and scientific applications. They operate by converting thermal energy (heat) into a measurable electrical signal, which can then be used as an input for process controllers, data loggers, and recorders.

How Does It Work?

The fundamental principle behind a thermocouple involves the Seebeck effect. It consists of two wires made from dissimilar metals, which are welded together at one end to form a "hot" junction (the measuring point). The opposite, open end is the "cold" or reference junction.

When the hot junction is exposed to a heat source, a temperature gradient is created along the wires. This gradient generates a small, predictable voltage, known as an Electromotive Force (EMF). This EMF is measured at the reference junction and directly corresponds to the temperature at the hot junction, allowing for precise temperature readings.

By selecting specific combinations of thermocouple wires and protective sheath materials, these sensors can be engineered to operate in extreme temperature ranges, from cryogenic levels (-200 °C / -328 °F) up to very high temperatures (2316 °C / 4200 °F).

Pyromation's Thermocouple Solutions

Pyromation is a leading manufacturer of high-quality thermocouples designed to meet the demands of nearly any application. Our extensive product line includes:

  • MgO (Magnesium Oxide) Insulated Thermocouples: Known for their durability, flexibility, and rapid response time.
  • Industrial Assemblies: Robust sensors designed for heavy-duty processes, often including connection heads, protection tubes, and thermowells for harsh environments.
  • General-Purpose Thermocouples: Versatile and economical solutions for a wide variety of standard applications.
  • Hazardous Location Assemblies: Specially designed and certified sensors for use in environments where flammable gases or dusts are present.

We also offer integrated solutions with transmitters to convert the thermocouple signal into a more robust 4-20mA signal for long-distance transmission. Whether you need a standard component or a custom-engineered assembly, Pyromation provides reliable and accurate temperature measurement solutions.
