What is a Thermocouple?

Thermocouples are among the most common, versatile, and cost-effective sensors used for temperature measurement across a vast range of industrial, scientific, and commercial applications. They are prized for their durability, wide temperature range, and rapid response time.

How Does a Thermocouple Work?

The operation of a thermocouple is based on the Seebeck effect. This principle states that when two different types of metal wires are joined together at one end (the "hot" or measuring junction), a small, predictable voltage, known as an Electromotive Force (EMF), is generated when this junction is heated or cooled.

This voltage changes in proportion to the temperature difference between the measuring junction and the other end (the "cold" or reference junction). This EMF is then measured by a temperature controller or reader, which converts the voltage signal into a precise temperature reading (e.g., °C or °F) based on the specific thermocouple type's calibration standard.

By selecting the right combination of metal wires and protective sheathing, thermocouples can be engineered to measure extreme temperatures, from as low as -200°C (-328°F) to as high as 2316°C (4200°F).

Pyromation's Range of Thermocouple Solutions

Pyromation is a leading manufacturer of high-quality thermocouples and replacement parts designed to meet the demands of nearly any market application. Our extensive product line includes:

  • MgO (Magnesium Oxide) Insulated Thermocouples: Ideal for high-temperature, high-vibration environments, offering excellent insulation and protection.
  • Industrial Thermocouples: Heavy-duty assemblies built for robust performance in demanding process conditions.
  • General-Purpose Thermocouples: Versatile and economical solutions for a wide variety of less-demanding applications.

We also specialize in creating complete temperature-sensing assemblies for specialized environments, including hazardous locations. These assemblies can be configured with essential components like connection heads, metal or ceramic protection tubes, thermowells for safe installation in pressurized systems, and integrated temperature transmitters for converting the signal for control systems.
