The Zeitfuchs Cross-Arm Viscometer (Size 8) is a specialized laboratory instrument designed for the precise measurement of kinematic viscosity in opaque or transparent liquids, particularly asphalt binders (bitumen) and road oils. This model is essential for quality control and research in the paving and petroleum industries, ensuring materials meet specific performance grades. It is specifically calibrated for testing products at standard temperatures, such as 140°F (60°C) for road oils and 275°F (135°C) for asphalt cements.

With a viscosity range of 2,000 to 10,000 centistokes (cSt) and an approximate constant of 10 cSt/s, this viscometer delivers highly accurate results with a precision of ±0.2% of the stated range. A key design feature is its small sample volume requirement of just 1 to 3mL. This efficiency not only conserves material but also allows the viscometer to be easily filled and cleaned while remaining immersed in a constant temperature bath, minimizing temperature fluctuations and saving time between tests. The unit requires a minimum bath immersion depth of 9in (230mm) to ensure stable and accurate readings.
