Sample Preparation The compactor is designed to prepare 4in (101.6mm) diameter samples for Marshall stability and other asphalt property laboratory tests. The 10lb (4.6kg) stainless steel flat-faced drop hammer is carefully positioned on a vertical guide rod to ensure correct alignment with every hammer blow, providing consistent and accurate results. The stationary 4in stainless steel Marshall mold, base, and collar assembly is positioned on an ASTM-compliant oak pedestal with a steel plate and secured with Gilson's exclusive easy clamp system. The operator raises and drops the hammer by hand until the required number of blows is completed.
