High-Performance Temperature Measurement for Industrial Applications
Thermocouples are the industry standard for temperature measurement, prized for their versatility, reliability, and wide operational range. They are essential sensors in countless industrial and commercial processes, converting heat into a measurable electrical signal.
How Does a Thermocouple Work?
A thermocouple operates on the principle of the Seebeck effect. It consists of two wires made from different metals, joined together at one end to form a measuring junction (the "hot" junction). The opposite end is the reference junction. When the measuring junction is exposed to heat, a temperature gradient is created along the wires, generating a small voltage, or Electromotive Force (EMF). This EMF is directly proportional to the temperature difference between the two junctions. Process controllers, recorders, or data acquisition systems then measure this voltage and convert it into a precise temperature reading.
By selecting specific metal alloys and protective sheath materials, thermocouples can be engineered to function accurately across an extremely broad temperature spectrum, from cryogenic lows of -200°C (-328°F) to extreme highs of 2316°C (4200°F).
