How Thermocouples Work A thermocouple operates on the principle of the Seebeck effect. When the hot junction is exposed to heat, a temperature gradient is created along the wires, generating a small voltage or Electromotive Force (EMF). This EMF is measured at the reference end and precisely converted into a temperature reading.
