Thermocouple, Type K, Ungrounded Junction, 1/4" OD, 24" Length, Standard Male Plug

Overview

Thermocouples are among the most common, versatile, and cost-effective devices for measuring temperature across a vast spectrum of industrial, commercial, and scientific applications. Their robust construction and wide temperature range make them an indispensable tool for monitoring and controlling thermal processes.

Operating Principle

Thermocouples operate on a principle known as the Seebeck effect. This principle states that when two different types of metal wires are joined at two points, and there is a temperature difference between these junctions, a small, predictable voltage (Electromotive Force or EMF) is created.

A typical thermocouple consists of:

  1. Measuring Junction (The "Hot" Junction): This is the end of the thermocouple that is placed in the process environment to be measured. The two dissimilar metal wires are welded together at this point.
  2. Reference Junction (The "Cold" Junction): This is the end where the voltage is measured. For an accurate reading, the temperature at this junction must be known or compensated for, which is typically handled automatically by the measuring instrument.

The temperature difference between the measuring junction and the reference junction generates the EMF. This voltage is then measured and converted by a process controller, recorder, or transmitter into a precise temperature reading based on standardized calibration tables for the specific thermocouple type.

Construction and Application

By carefully selecting specific thermocouple wire alloys and protective sheath materials, thermocouples can be designed to operate in extreme environments. They are suitable for temperature ranges from cryogenic levels (-200 °C / -328 °F) up to very high temperatures, such as those found in furnaces and kilns (2316 °C / 4200 °F).

Pyromation's Thermocouple Solutions

Pyromation is a leading manufacturer of a comprehensive range of thermocouples and direct replacement parts for nearly every market application. Our product offerings include:

  • MgO (Magnesium Oxide) Insulated Thermocouples: These are rugged, flexible, and offer excellent performance and resistance to vibration and high temperatures.
  • Industrial Thermocouples: Designed for heavy-duty process applications, often used with connection heads and thermowells for added protection.
  • General-Purpose Thermocouples: Versatile and cost-effective solutions for a wide variety of less demanding applications.
  • Specialized Assemblies: We also engineer and manufacture complete thermocouple assemblies for hazardous locations (explosion-proof) and other critical applications that require integrated components like connection heads, protection tubes, thermowells, and signal transmitters to convert the thermocouple's millivolt signal to a more robust 4-20 mA signal.
