Product Overview
Thermocouples are among the most common, versatile, and cost-effective devices used for temperature measurement across a vast range of industrial, commercial, and scientific applications. Their simple construction, wide temperature range, and durability make them an essential tool for process control and monitoring.
How Thermocouples Work
A thermocouple operates on the Seebeck effect, a thermoelectric phenomenon. It consists of two wires made from different metals joined together at one end to form a "hot" or measuring junction. The other end, known as the "cold" or reference junction, is connected to a temperature controller or readout device.
When the measuring junction is exposed to a change in temperature, a temperature gradient is created along the wires. This gradient generates a small voltage, or Electromotive Force (EMF), which is proportional to the temperature difference between the measuring junction and the reference junction. This millivolt signal is then interpreted by the connected instrumentation and converted into a precise temperature reading.
By selecting specific thermocouple wire types and protective sheath materials, thermocouples can be engineered to measure extreme temperatures, ranging from as low as -200°C (-328°F) to as high as 2316°C (4200°F).
