The Laboratory Asphalt Permeameter is a precise and reliable instrument designed to measure the hydraulic conductivity of saturated asphalt samples. It is compatible with 6in (152mm) diameter asphalt cores or laboratory-compacted specimens, using the falling head method — a simple, well-established procedure originally developed by the Florida Department of Transportation (DOT). A 4in (102mm) version is also available, though it does not meet the sample size requirements outlined in the FM 5-565 test method.

How It Works

The asphalt sample is secured within a metal cylinder using expanding discs, which are lined with a replaceable latex membrane. A self-contained manual pump serves a dual purpose: it creates a vacuum to hold the membrane against the cylinder walls during sample placement, and pressurizes the membrane during testing to eliminate air voids and prevent water from flowing around the outside of the specimen. A built-in dial gauge allows the operator to easily monitor the vacuum or pressure applied by the hand pump. The permeability of the prepared specimen is then determined by timing the flow of water from the included 500cc Manometer through the sample.
