60-inch Coiled Thermocouple Extension Wire (Type K)

Product Code: KE5-C3060-6

This high-quality, 60-inch coiled thermocouple extension wire is designed to reliably transmit signals from a Type K thermocouple sensor to your instrumentation or readout device. Its coiled design provides flexibility and keeps workspaces tidy by preventing tangles and excess cable length, extending up to 60 inches when needed and retracting for compact storage.

Key Features:

  • Thermocouple Type: Type K (Chromel-Alumel)
  • Length: 12-inch retracted, 60-inch maximum extension
  • Connectors: Standard Female Jack to a Mini Male Plug
  • Jacket: Durable yellow PVC jacket, color-coded for Type K, rated for continuous use up to 105°C.
  • Design: Flexible and retractable coil cord for easy management.

What is Thermocouple Extension Wire?

Thermocouple extension wire is a critical component for accurate temperature measurement. It is used to create a bridge between the thermocouple probe, which is at the point of measurement, and the control or display instrument located at a distance. To maintain signal integrity and prevent measurement errors, the extension wire must be made from the same or similar thermoelectric materials as the thermocouple it is paired with. This ensures the thermoelectric circuit is extended without introducing false temperature readings.

Why Use Matching Extension Wire?

The material used in the extension wire must match the positive and negative legs of your thermocouple (in this case, Type K). Using a different material, like standard copper wire, would create an unwanted thermoelectric junction at the connection point, leading to inaccurate temperature readings.

Exception: If a temperature transmitter is installed within the thermocouple sensor assembly, the signal is converted to a standardized electrical signal (e.g., 4-20 mA). In this scenario, standard copper wire can be used to carry this converted signal to the process control equipment.

Available Options and Services

We offer a comprehensive selection of thermocouple grade and extension wires in various gauges and insulation types. Beyond standard offerings, we can provide specialized constructions, including multi-pair extension wires and RTD cables, to meet the unique demands of your application. All our thermocouple and extension wires are specified according to ASTM/ANSI calibration designations.

Common Thermocouple Types (ASTM/ANSI):

  • Type K: Chromel/Alumel (Most common)
  • Type J: Iron/Constantan
  • Type T: Copper/Constantan
  • Type E: Chromel/Constantan
  • Type N: Nicrosil/Nisil
  • Type S: Platinum/Platinum (10% Rhodium)
  • Type R: Platinum/Platinum (13% Rhodium)
  • Type B: Platinum (6% Rhodium)/Platinum (30% Rhodium)

Pyromation is a leading manufacturer of a wide range of thermocouple assemblies and replacement parts for nearly any industrial or general-purpose application, including MgO, hazardous location assemblies, thermowells, and integrated transmitters.
