A thermocouple works by converting heat energy into a measurable electrical signal, which is then used as input for process controllers, recorders, or monitoring systems. It consists of two dissimilar metal wires joined at one end, referred to as the 'hot junction,' and an open 'reference junction' at the other end. When the hot junction is exposed to a temperature source, a temperature gradient is created, producing an electromotive force (EMF). Type K thermocouples, made from Chromel (+) and Alumel (-) metals, are among the most popular thermocouple types due to their wide temperature range (-200 to 1260 °C / -328 to 2300 °F), excellent accuracy, and compatibility with various environments, including oxidizing or inert atmospheres. They are ideal for applications such as furnaces, kilns, HVAC systems, and food processing.
The ungrounded junction design of this thermocouple provides electrical isolation between the sensing element and the outer sheath, helping to reduce electrical noise and interference in environments with high electromagnetic activity.
