Windsor Probe Test System (Standard): Windsor Probe Chart

The Windsor Probe System has been updated to improve accuracy and speed of measurement, meeting the new ASTM C803 safety and specification requirements for testing penetration resistance in hardened concrete. The driver can only be released by pushing firmly on the actuating template during a test. The actuating template has been enlarged for added protection from debris. The driver component cannot be discharged unless sufficient force is applied against the actuating template.

Each system comes with a portable carrying case with driver and all templates and accessories for positioning and measuring. A Moh’s Hardness of coarse aggregate kit is also included. Probes are sold separately in Kits or in Cases of 25 Kits. Each Kit has 3 probes, 3 adapters and 3 power loads to run one test. Probe specs and tolerances are included. Various probes and accessories necessary for use must be purchased separately. Before giving the order to start steel erection, the controlling contractor must ensure that the concrete in footings and walls has reached the required strength, following protocols like the Windsor Probe/Pin testing and its calibration.

Also, the system can test up to 17,000 PSI, for structural integrity and compliance to various standards.

Standard Test System is the budget friendly option for those with limited needs. The system comes with a manual depth gauge to measure the exposed length of the embedded probes and a printed chart to estimate concrete strength. System measures concrete testing equipment in inches and millimeters.

Digital Test System has electronic acquisition and calculation of probe data for more accuracy and speed. Menu driven electronic measuring system is easy to use. Simply enter aggregate hardness and concrete type, position the measuring unit over each probe and press “Enter” to measure probe depths. The advanced system will average, display and store depth readings in memory along with date and time. Calculated strengths will be displayed in either psi or mPa. Data can be downloaded to a PC with included software cables. Standard systems can be upgraded with WP-700 Electronic Measuring Upgrade. Systems display in both psi and mPa.

What is the Windsor Probe Test System for Penetration Resistance?

The Windsor Probe Test System is a non-destructive testing device to measure the compressive strength of hardened concrete. It helps in the determination of the developing strength of concrete during different stages of curing. Regression models and testing systems have been developed to predict the compressive strength of concrete. It is a widely used field test for on-site testing, provides accurate and reliable results. Meets ASTM C803/803M and other specs for accuracy and measurement. With the Windsor Probe you can evaluate the compressive strength of concrete without causing significant damage, enhancing efficiency measurement for quick and economical assessment of concrete strength, making it a must-have in construction and quality control. The system is effective for both fresh and mature concrete.

Principles of the Test

The Windsor Probe Test is based on the principle of measuring the penetration resistance of hardened concrete using a Windsor probe. The test procedure involves inserting the probe into the concrete to a specified depth and then measuring the force required to push the probe through. The probe is a powder-actuated driving unit that fires steel units into the concrete, and the average penetration of three probes is used to determine the compressive strength. The test is designed to provide accurate and consistent results, and it is an essential tool for evaluating the developing strength of concrete. The Windsor Probe Test system is supplied with a template that ensures accurate and reliable operation, and it is designed to prevent discharge. The system also features capabilities, allowing users to store and review test results, including date and time of measurement.

How it Works

The Windsor Probe Test System works by using a powder-actuated driving unit to fire steel probes into the concrete. The system has been empirically validated and tested through independent trials. Accurate results can be obtained from various surfaces and conditions. Using three probes to achieve statistically reliable results in strength testing is crucial, as averaging the penetration results helps confirm laboratory findings and accurately measure compressive strength. The probes will penetrate the concrete to a specific depth and the force required to break the probe is measured. This force is then correlated to the compressive strength of the concrete and provides an accurate estimate of the concrete strength. It’s ideal for high performance concrete and measures up to 17000 psi (110 MPa). Caution should be taken to start with low power settings to avoid excessive damage that may occur to the concrete under test. This method provides precise and repeatable results, making it a proven choice for concrete strength testing.

Testing Procedure and Equipment for Concrete Strength

The testing procedure with the Windsor Probe Test System involves several steps to get accurate results. First the concrete surface is prepared to allow proper probe insertion. The probe is then fired into the concrete using the powder-actuated driving unit. The force required to break the probe is measured with a manual depth gauge. The system includes the driving unit, probes and depth gauge. Probes are sold separately and the system is designed to prevent accidental discharge for user safety. The actuating template ensures accurate and repeatable operation and the system is PC safe for data storage and management. Gold probes are specifically designed for light-weight concrete applications, offering a larger cross-sectional area compared to silver probes, making them suitable for testing concrete with a density of less than 125 lbs/cu. ft. Silver probes, on the other hand, are used for high-performance concrete testing, characterized by their suitability for concrete with higher strength and density.
