Type T Teflon Thermocouple Wire, 20 AWG (100ft Roll)
The Pyromation T20-1-507 Type-T Teflon Thermocouple Wire, 20 AWG (100ft Roll), is engineered for precision temperature measurement in a wide array of demanding applications.
Type T thermocouples, composed of Copper (+) and Constantan (-), are highly valued for their exceptional accuracy and stability, particularly in cryogenic and sub-zero environments, with an operating range from -200°C to +350°C (-328°F to +662°F). The Teflon (FEP/PTFE) insulation provides superior chemical resistance, excellent dielectric strength, and a wide temperature tolerance, making this wire an ideal choice for harsh industrial settings where exposure to oils, solvents, and corrosive elements is common. The 20 AWG gauge offers an optimal balance of mechanical strength, flexibility for installation, and reliable signal transmission over moderate distances.
Understanding Thermocouple Extension Wire
Thermocouple extension wire is critical for accurately transmitting the low-level millivolt (mV) signal generated by the thermocouple sensor to your readout or control device. To ensure the integrity of this signal and maintain calibration accuracy, the conductor materials of the extension wire must precisely match those of the thermocouple type (e.g., Type T) being used. A mismatch can introduce spurious electromotive forces (EMF) and lead to measurement errors.
However, when a temperature transmitter is integrated directly into the thermocouple assembly, it converts the mV signal into a standardized, scalable 4-20mA current loop signal. In such instances, standard copper instrument cable is then used to send this converted signal back to the process control equipment, as the signal is no longer a direct thermocouple mV output.
RTD Wiring
RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) sensors, which operate on a different principle, typically use ordinary copper instrumentation cable to relay their resistance signal back to the recording, readout, or control device. If an RTD transmitter is installed within the sensor assembly, a 4-20mA signal is similarly transmitted via standard copper wire.

Common Thermocouple Types (ASTM/ANSI Designations):
- Type K (Chromel®/Alumel®): General-purpose, wide temperature range, good for oxidizing atmospheres.
- Type J (Iron/Constantan): Suitable for reducing atmospheres, common in older equipment.
- Type T (Copper/Constantan): Excellent for cryogenic and sub-zero applications, highly stable.
- Type E (Chromel®/Constantan): Highest EMF output, ideal for sensitive measurements.
- Type N (Nicrosil®/Nisil®): Improved stability and oxidation resistance at high temperatures.
- Type S (Platinum/Platinum (10% Rhodium)): High-temperature applications, stable in oxidizing atmospheres.
- Type R (Platinum/Platinum (13% Rhodium)): Similar to Type S, with slightly higher output.
- Type B (Platinum (6% Rhodium)/Platinum (30% Rhodium)): Ultra-high temperature applications, exceptional stability at extreme heat.
