Type K PVC Thermocouple Extension Wire, 20 AWG (100ft Roll): Precision Temperature Sensing
Thermocouple extension wire plays a crucial role in accurate temperature measurement systems. It's specifically designed to faithfully transmit the low-voltage thermoelectric signal generated by a thermocouple sensor to a monitoring or control device, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of your temperature readings.
The Critical Importance of Material Matching: For precise temperature monitoring, it is absolutely essential that the extension wire's materials perfectly match the positive and negative thermoelectric alloys of the specific thermocouple type (e.g., Type K) being used. This strict material pairing prevents the creation of unwanted thermoelectric junctions, which could introduce errors and compromise the accuracy of your measurements. Pyromation adheres to stringent manufacturing standards to ensure seamless compatibility and reliable performance.
When to Use Thermocouple Extension Wire vs. Copper: Typically, thermocouple extension wire is employed when directly connecting a thermocouple sensor to a readout device over a distance. However, if a temperature transmitter is integrated directly into the thermocouple sensor assembly, it converts the thermocouple's millivolt signal into a standard industrial signal, such as a scalable 4-20 mA current. In these instances, ordinary copper instrumentation cable can then be used to transmit the converted signal back to the process control equipment, offering flexibility and cost savings.
Distinction with RTD Wiring: Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) operate on a different principle, measuring temperature via changes in electrical resistance. Consequently, RTD sensors utilize standard copper instrumentation cable to send their resistance signal to the recording or control device. Similar to thermocouples, if an RTD transmitter is installed, copper wire is used for the resulting 4-20 mA signal.
Pyromation's K20-5-502 Type-K PVC Thermocouple Wire: This specific product is a 100-foot roll of 20 AWG (American Wire Gauge) Type K thermocouple extension wire.
- Type K: One of the most common and versatile thermocouple types, Type K (Chromel/Alumel) is ideal for a wide range of applications, offering good accuracy and a broad temperature range in oxidizing atmospheres.
- 20 AWG: The 20-gauge wire provides a balance of electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, and flexibility, suitable for many industrial and laboratory environments.
- PVC Insulation: The Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) insulation offers excellent flexibility, good resistance to moisture, chemicals, and abrasion, making it a reliable choice for general-purpose applications where extreme temperatures are not present (typically rated up to 105°C).
Pyromation: Your Trusted Source for Temperature Wire: Pyromation offers a comprehensive selection of thermocouple grade and extension wires, including various sizes, gauges, and insulation materials to meet diverse application needs. We also provide wire insulators and specialized constructions, such as multi-pair thermocouple extension wire, designed for demanding environments.
