Type K Fiberglass Thermocouple Wire, 20 AWG (100ft Roll) - Precision Temperature Sensing
Ensure superior accuracy and reliability in your temperature measurement systems with Pyromation's Type K Fiberglass Thermocouple Wire. This 20 AWG, 100ft roll is specifically engineered for optimal signal integrity, critical for applications ranging from industrial process control to laboratory research.
Understanding Thermocouple Extension Wire: Thermocouple extension wire plays a vital role in accurately transmitting the millivolt signal generated by a thermocouple sensor to the readout or control device. Maintaining signal integrity over distance is paramount for precise temperature readings. To achieve this, the extension wire's material composition must precisely match the positive and negative legs of the thermocouple type being used (e.g., Type K, J, T, E, N). This adherence to material compatibility prevents unwanted thermoelectric errors, ensuring the highest degree of accuracy in your measurements.
When to Use Copper Wire: In scenarios where a transmitter is integrated directly into the thermocouple sensor assembly, a scalable (e.g., 4 to 20 mA) signal is often generated. In such cases, standard copper instrumentation wire is typically used to carry this amplified signal back to the process control equipment. This is because the signal is no longer a raw millivolt output requiring specific thermocouple alloy compensation.
RTD Sensor Wiring: Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) sensors operate on a different principle, measuring changes in electrical resistance with temperature. Consequently, RTD sensors utilize ordinary copper instrumentation cable to transmit their resistance signal to recording, readout, or control devices. Similar to thermocouples, if a transmitter is present within the RTD sensor assembly, copper wire is employed for the scalable (4 to 20 mA) signal transmission.
Pyromation's Commitment to Quality: Pyromation offers a comprehensive selection of thermocouple grade and extension wires, available in various sizes, gauges, and insulation types, including our durable fiberglass options. We also provide specialized constructions, such as multi-pair thermocouple extension wire, to meet diverse application requirements. Our inventory extends to wire insulators and custom RTD cables. All our thermocouple and extension wires are meticulously manufactured and specified to meet stringent ASTM/ANSI calibration designations, ensuring consistent performance.
Common Thermocouple Types (ASTM/ANSI Designations):
- Type K: Chromel®/Alumel® - Ideal for a wide range of applications due to its good linearity and wide temperature range.
- Type J: Iron/Constantan - Suitable for general-purpose applications in reducing atmospheres.
- Type T: Copper/Constantan - Excellent stability at low temperatures, often used in cryogenic applications.
- Type E: Chromel®/Constantan - High EMF output, offering higher sensitivity than other types.
- Type N: Nicrosil®/Nisil® - Offers improved stability and oxidation resistance at high temperatures compared to Type K.
- Type S: Platinum/Platinum (10% Rhodium) - Used for very high-temperature applications, offering excellent stability.
- Type R: Platinum/Platinum (13% Rhodium) - Similar to Type S but with slightly higher output and similar high-temperature stability.
- Type B: Platinum (6% Rhodium)/Platinum (30% Rhodium) - The highest temperature range of common thermocouples, used for extreme high-temperature measurements.
