Thermocouple, Type T, Ungrounded Junction, 1/8in Diameter, 18in Length, Mini Male Plug
Thermocouples are the most common, versatile, and cost-effective devices used for measuring temperature across a vast array of industrial, commercial, and scientific applications. They are known for their durability, wide temperature range, and rapid response times.
How do thermocouples work?
Thermocouples operate on the principle of the Seebeck effect, converting thermal energy (heat) into a measurable electrical signal. A thermocouple consists of two wires made from different metals, welded together at one end to form a "hot" junction. This is the sensing end that is placed in the environment where the temperature needs to be measured. The opposite end is the "cold" or reference junction.
When the hot junction is heated or cooled, a temperature gradient is created along the wires. This gradient generates a small voltage, or Electromotive Force (EMF), which is proportional to the temperature difference between the hot and cold junctions. This EMF is then measured at the free ends of the wires and converted into a precise temperature reading.
Key Features and Benefits:
- Wide Temperature Range: By selecting the appropriate thermocouple type (defined by the specific metals used), these sensors can measure temperatures from as low as -200°C (-328°F) to as high as 2316°C (4200°F).
- Durability: Thermocouples are rugged and can withstand shock, vibration, and harsh industrial environments.
- Versatility: They can be used in liquids, gases, and solids, and can be customized into various probe styles.
- Fast Response: Due to their small mass, thermocouples can respond very quickly to changes in temperature.
