What is a Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD)?
Resistance Temperature Detectors, also known as resistance thermometers, are advanced sensors designed to measure process temperatures with exceptional accuracy, repeatability, and stability. Their operation is based on a predictable relationship: as the temperature of a metallic element changes, so does its electrical resistance.
How Do RTDs Work?
The core of an RTD is its sensing element, which is typically made from platinum, nickel, or copper. This element is manufactured by winding a fine wire around a ceramic or glass core (wire-wound) or by depositing a thin layer of metal onto a ceramic substrate (thin-film).
In practice, a small, stable electrical current is passed through the RTD element. The resulting voltage drop across the element is measured. Since this voltage is directly proportional to the resistance, it can be precisely converted into a temperature reading.
Key Features and Configurations:
- Lead Wire Compensation: RTDs, especially platinum types like the common Pt100, have a low initial resistance (e.g., 100 ohms at 0°C). Over long distances, the resistance of the lead wires can introduce errors. To compensate for this, 3-wire and 4-wire bridge configurations are used. A 3-wire setup provides good accuracy for most industrial applications, while a 4-wire configuration offers the highest precision by completely eliminating lead wire resistance from the measurement.
- Wide Temperature Range: By selecting the appropriate element material and protective sheathing, RTDs can operate reliably across a broad temperature spectrum, typically from -200°C to 600°C (-328°F to 1112°F).
- High Accuracy and Repeatability: The inherent stability of platinum allows RTDs to provide highly repeatable and accurate measurements over long service periods, making them a preferred choice for critical process control.
