Precision RTD Assembly with Tri-Clamp Fitting

This Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) assembly is engineered for superior temperature measurement in critical industrial applications. Featuring a robust Tri-Clamp fitting for hygienic and secure process connections, this RTD is designed for industries requiring stringent cleanliness and rapid installation, such as food & beverage, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology.

Key Specifications:

  • Type: RTD Assembly with Tri-Clamp Fitting
  • Resistance: 100 Ohm (typically Pt100, common for industrial accuracy)
  • Sheath Diameter: 1/4" OD (Outside Diameter)
  • Sheath Length: 4"
  • Tri-Clamp Size: 1.5" 16 AMP (standard for many sanitary processes)
  • Connection Head: Polypropylene Head (offers excellent chemical resistance and durability)

Understanding Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs)

Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs), also known as resistance thermometers, are highly precise temperature sensors that operate on the principle that the electrical resistance of certain metals changes predictably with temperature. This assembly utilizes this fundamental principle to provide accurate and repeatable temperature readings.

How RTDs Work: At the core of an RTD is a sensing element made from pure metal, such as platinum (Pt), nickel (Ni), or copper (Cu). As the process temperature changes, the electrical resistance of this metallic element also changes. A small excitation current is passed through the element, and the resulting voltage drop, which is directly proportional to the resistance, is precisely measured. This voltage is then converted into a temperature reading using a known calibration curve.

Construction of the Sensing Element: The RTD measurement element is typically manufactured in two common ways:

  1. Wire-wound elements: A fine wire is wound around a ceramic or glass core.
  2. Thin-film elements: A thin layer of metal is deposited onto a ceramic substrate. Both types are then hermetically sealed within a ceramic or glass capsule to protect them from environmental factors.

Precision and Lead Wire Compensation: Given that most industrial RTDs, particularly the 100-ohm type, have a relatively low initial resistance and a small resistance change per degree of temperature, accurate measurement can be affected by the resistance of the lead wires connecting the sensor to the measuring instrument. To counteract this, this assembly is designed to be compatible with a three- or four-wire bridge configuration. These advanced wiring setups, often built directly into industrial measuring devices, effectively compensate for lead wire resistance, ensuring that only the temperature-dependent resistance of the sensing element is measured, thus maintaining high accuracy.

Performance and Applications

Temperature Range: This specific RTD assembly is designed for a broad operational range, typically from -200°C to +200°C (-328°F to 392°F). This range makes it suitable for a wide variety of industrial processes, from cryogenic applications to moderate-temperature systems.

Sheath Material: The 1/4" OD sheath is constructed from 316 Stainless Steel (316SS). This material choice is critical for demanding environments, offering:

  • Superior Corrosion Resistance: Especially against chlorides and other corrosive agents found in many process industries.
  • High Strength and Durability: Ensures mechanical integrity in harsh conditions.
  • Hygienic Properties: 316SS is widely accepted for sanitary applications, resisting bacterial growth and easy to clean.

Versatile Applications: Pyromation offers a comprehensive range of resistance temperature detectors and resistance thermometers tailored for numerous industry applications. From single- or dual-element RTDs, various platinum types like Pt100s and Pt1000s, to specialized Sanitary CIP (Clean-In-Place) configurations, we provide the ideal RTD solution for your specific needs. If your application demands a unique configuration not found in our standard catalog, our expert product engineers are available to custom-design an RTD measurement device, including specialized temperature sensor assemblies that may require specific connection heads, thermowells, and/or transmitters to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance.
