NCAT Asphalt Field Permeameter Kit

The NCAT Field Asphalt Permeameter Kit was developed in collaboration with the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) and is widely recognized for its close correlation with laboratory test results. This falling-head permeameter applies Darcy's Law to measure the rate at which water flows through asphalt pavement, providing accurate, on-site permeability estimations without the need for coring, patching, or laboratory testing.

Designed for efficiency, the kit allows a single technician to complete testing in just 10–15 minutes with no extensive training required. This makes it an ideal tool for quality control during pavement construction, allowing corrections to mix and placement procedures to be implemented immediately, reducing costly delays and rework.

The permeameter features a 4-tiered graduated standpipe, supplied in two sections and constructed of durable, rugged plastic built to withstand the demands of field use. To conduct a test, a sealing material is applied to the base plate, and the unit is positioned on the test surface and secured using gentle foot pressure and the included base weights. After filling the standpipe with water, the outflow is observed against clearly marked graduations and timed to calculate the permeability rate.

The tiered design allows the kit to adapt to a wide range of pavement types. The uppermost tier enables rapid determinations in low-porosity pavements, while the larger diameter tiers provide sufficient time to accurately measure flow in more porous pavements. An alternate top section is also included, replacing the two top tiers with a single, larger diameter tier for extended test times on moderately permeable mats or for rapid filling when testing highly permeable mixes.
