ASTM Pocket Penetrometer, Concrete Initial Set (Dial Type)
The Initial Set Concrete Pocket Penetrometer (Dial Type) is a small and precise instrument for testing concrete setting time. 2.25” (57mm) diameter dial gauge with clear and accurate readings. Dual scales 0-700 psi and 0-50 kg/cm² for versatile measurements. Maximum reading is locked in until released by a push button. For other essential equipment, such as a dual range dial thermometer for accurate temperature measurements, calibrate with an ordinary platform balance and the provided register plates. Durable plastic case, factory certified and instructions included.
Also for reviewing mortar with ASTM standards.
Features:
-
Dial gauge diameter: 2.25”
-
Dual scales: 0-700 psi and 0-50 kg/cm²
-
Plunger: 1/20 in² (32.3mm²)
-
Overall length: 6”
-
Meets: ASTM C780
Penetrometer (Dial Type) is used when concrete mixes are nearing initial set. Concrete can no longer be consolidated at this stage and is almost ready for finishing operations. ASTM defines initial set of concrete mortar as when 500 psi (3.4 MPa) of force is required to embed probe 1” into the concrete. This concrete penetrometer has a 1/20 in² (32.3 mm²) plunger which is pushed into fresh concrete at a constant rate to the 1” mark. Introduction and Applications
The soil pocket penetrometer is a useful tool used in field and lab to understand the penetration resistance of cohesive soils. This handheld device also known as hand penetrometer is used to measure the approximate shear strength of soils, very important for soil stability and safety. The pocket penetrometer is a simple, portable and non-destructive method that can be used in various applications, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, construction. It is very useful to determine the unconfined compressive strength of cohesive soils which is very important for designing foundations, excavations and other soil related structures. By using a pocket penetrometer, engineers and technicians can quickly and easily evaluate soil properties, consistency, shear strength and penetration resistance in the field without the need of laboratory testing.
Description
The pocket penetrometer is a hand held device to measure the approximate shear strength of cohesive and semi-cohesive soils. This tool is used for the load bearing capacity and stability, very useful for both field and lab. The device has a slender metal rod with a calibrated spring loaded mechanism and a graduated scale to measure. Simple, portable and easy to use, the pocket penetrometer is a quick and reliable way to test soil properties, to get accurate strength and consistency. Another similar device is the Torvane shear tester, which provides an efficient way of assessing strength in cohesive soils.
Types of Devices
There are several types of pocket penetrometers available, each with its own features and applications. The most common is the soil pocket penetrometer used to measure cohesive soils. This device has a lightweight, handheld unit with a plunger, a calibrated spring and a direct reading scale. The scale is usually engraved with units of measurement, tons per square foot and corresponds to unconfined compressive strength values. Another type is the concrete mortar penetrometer used to measure the initial set and strength of concrete mortar. Other types of pocket penetrometers may have different piston diameters, 0.25in (6.4mm) or 1in (25mm) to test various soil types and conditions. When choosing a pocket penetrometer consider the application, soil type and desired level of accuracy to get the right device. OSHA recommends using pocket penetrometers to evaluate soil strength and stability in excavations, so it’s a must have for worker safety and accident prevention. Technical
The pocket penetrometer has a direct reading scale in kgf/cm² which corresponds to the equivalent unconfined compressive strength of the soil. This calibration ensures the device measures the force to penetrate the soil to a certain depth accurately. Meets ASTM D 2573-94 standard for field and lab testing. A must have for professionals who need accurate soil property measurements.
In the field the pocket penetrometer is used to test the soil surface and compacted soil, to get a quick and reliable measurement of soil consistency, shear strength and approximate equivalent unconfined strength. By reviewing soil cohesion and internal friction the device gives valuable information about soil stability and load bearing capacity. A must have for field usage, to make informed decisions about soil conditions and to ensure construction safety.
The pocket penetrometer is also useful in lab for soil samples. It gives a reliable and accurate measurement of the penetration resistance of soil which is important to understand the equivalent unconfined compressive strength. This parameter is important in geotechnical engineering as it gives a deeper understanding of soil behavior and properties. By using the pocket penetrometer in lab, professionals can get precise information about soil properties and thorough field and lab evaluation of soil samples.
