Balloon Density Apparatus Overview
The Balloon Density Apparatus is a tool designed to measure the in-situ density and unit weight of compacted soil. It includes a calibrated, water-filled vessel with a hand-operated pump that pressurizes a flexible rubber balloon to fill soil voids. The volume of the hole is determined by fluid displacement, and in-place density is calculated by dividing the weight of the excavated soil by the measured volume. This method is ideal for soils with particle sizes up to 1/2 inch (13mm) but unsuitable for very soft or easily deformed soils.
