Type K Thermocouple Probe | 3/16" Diameter, 18" Length with 36" Teflon Leads
Product Overview
This Type K Thermocouple from Pyromation is a highly versatile and robust temperature sensing device, engineered for a wide range of industrial and commercial applications. Thermocouples are the industry standard for temperature measurement due to their reliability, wide temperature range, and cost-effectiveness. This model is designed for precision and durability, making it an ideal choice for process control, monitoring, and data logging.
How Thermocouples Work
A thermocouple operates on the principle of the Seebeck effect. It consists of a "hot" junction, where two wires made of dissimilar metals are welded together, and a reference junction at the opposite end. When the hot junction is exposed to a heat source, a temperature gradient is created, which generates a small voltage, or Electromotive Force (EMF). This EMF is measured at the reference end and is directly proportional to the temperature difference. The signal is then converted into a precise temperature reading for use by controllers, recorders, or digital displays.
By selecting specific metal alloys and sheath materials, thermocouples can be designed to measure an extensive range of temperatures, from cryogenic levels (-200°C / -328°F) up to extremely high heats (2316°C / 4200°F).
Key Features and Specifications
- Thermocouple Type: Type K (Chromel-Alumel), one of the most common general-purpose thermocouples, known for its wide temperature range and good corrosion resistance.
- Junction Type: Ungrounded Junction. The thermocouple junction is isolated from the outer metal sheath, which provides excellent protection against electrical noise and interference from stray voltages. This makes it ideal for applications where the sensor might come into contact with conductive materials.
- Probe Dimensions:
- Outer Diameter (OD): 3/16 inch (0.1875")
- Probe Length: 18 inches
- Lead Wire:
- Length: 36 inches
- Insulation: High-quality Teflon (PTFE) insulation, offering excellent resistance to moisture, chemicals, and abrasion.
- Ends: 2-inch stripped ends for easy connection to terminals or instruments.
- Transition: Standard transition with a spring strain relief, providing flexibility and protecting the lead wire from damage at the probe exit point.
- Temperature Ranges:
- Probe Operating Range: 0°C to 927°C (32°F to 1700°F)
- Max Ambient Wire Temperature: 204°C (400°F) Continuous
- Wire Color Code: Standard ASTM/ANSI: Red (Negative) / Yellow (Positive)
