Type J Thermocouple: 3/16" OD, 12" L, with 1/2" NPT Stainless Steel Hex Nipple
Product Overview
Thermocouples are the most common, versatile, and practical devices used for temperature measurement across a vast range of industrial, commercial, and scientific applications. They function by converting thermal energy into a measurable electrical signal, which serves as a crucial input for process controllers, recorders, and data loggers.
Operating Principle
A thermocouple operates on the principle of the Seebeck effect. It consists of two wires made from dissimilar metals, which are joined together at one end to form a "hot" or measuring junction. The other end, known as the "cold" or reference junction, is where the measurement is taken. When the hot junction is exposed to a heat source, a temperature gradient is created along the wires. This gradient generates a small voltage, or Electromotive Force (EMF), which is directly proportional to the temperature difference between the two junctions. This EMF is then measured and converted into a precise temperature reading.
By selecting specific metal alloys and protective sheathing materials, thermocouples can be engineered to measure an extremely broad spectrum of temperatures, from cryogenic lows of -200°C (-328°F) to extreme highs of over 2300°C (4200°F).
Type J Thermocouples
The Type J thermocouple, made from an Iron (+) and Constantan (-) junction, is one of the most widely used types due to its reliability and cost-effectiveness. It is particularly well-suited for applications in non-oxidizing or inert environments.
- Temperature Range: 0 to 760°C (32 to 1400°F)
- Strengths: Good for general-purpose use within its temperature range; highly sensitive and offers good output.
- Limitations: The iron wire is susceptible to oxidation at higher temperatures, especially in moist or oxidizing atmospheres, which can affect its accuracy over time. It is not recommended for use below 0°C due to potential rusting and embrittlement.
Pyromation Thermocouple Solutions
Pyromation is a leading manufacturer of high-quality thermocouples and replacement parts designed for nearly any market application. Our product line includes:
- MgO (Magnesium Oxide) Insulated Thermocouples: These offer excellent durability, high-temperature resistance, and protection against vibration and moisture.
- Industrial-Grade Assemblies: Built for demanding environments, these often include connection heads, protection tubes, and thermowells for enhanced longevity and safety.
- General-Purpose Thermocouples: Versatile and reliable solutions for a wide variety of standard applications.
- Hazardous Location Assemblies: Designed and certified for use in environments where flammable gases, vapors, or dust may be present.
We also integrate transmitters into our assemblies to convert the low-level thermocouple signal into a more robust 4-20mA signal for long-distance transmission and improved noise immunity.
