1-1/2" Dowel Bar Caps (500 per Carton)

Product Details:

  • Application: Specifically designed for dowel bar retrofit applications in concrete pavements.
  • Dimensions: 1-1/2" diameter, 1" length.
  • Purpose: These plastic caps are placed on one end of a smooth dowel bar before it is set into concrete. This creates a small void, allowing the concrete slab to expand and contract freely with temperature changes, which prevents stress cracks and joint spalling.

What is Dowel Bar Retrofitting?

Dowel Bar Retrofit (DBR) is a concrete pavement restoration (CPR) technique used to repair and strengthen existing concrete highways, extending their service life and improving ride quality. Many states are now retrofitting older highways with epoxy-coated dowel bars to restore load transfer capabilities across transverse joints and cracks.

The Dowel Bar Retrofit Process:

  1. Slot Cutting: The process begins by cutting a series of slots (typically three in each wheel path) across existing transverse joints or cracks. This is done with precision using ganged diamond saws.
  2. Concrete Removal: The concrete within the slots is carefully removed using lightweight jackhammers to avoid damaging the surrounding pavement.
  3. Bar Placement: Epoxy-coated dowel bars, fitted with dowel bar caps on one end, are placed into the newly created slots. Chairs or clips are used to ensure the bars are held in the correct position and alignment.
  4. Backfilling: The slots are then backfilled with a high-strength, rapid-set grout material, which secures the bars in place.
  5. Joint Sealing: The original joints or cracks are resealed with a waterproof caulk to prevent moisture intrusion.
  6. Diamond Grinding: The final step involves diamond-grinding the surface. This removes any excess grout and smooths out any unevenness between the concrete panels, resulting in a significantly improved ride for motorists.

Why Use Dowel Bar Retrofitting?

  • Extended Pavement Life: DBR is a proven method that can add years of life to concrete pavements, outlasting traditional asphalt overlays by at least a decade.
  • Improved Ride Quality: By restoring load transfer and smoothing the road surface, DBR significantly reduces bumps and dips, creating a safer and more comfortable driving experience.
  • Cost-Effective: Compared to the cost of full pavement replacement, retrofitting is a more economical solution. It also reduces the need for frequent maintenance, as grinding would otherwise be required every six to eight years.
