What is Dowel Bar Retrofitting?

Dowel Bar Retrofit (DBR) is a concrete pavement restoration (CPR) technique used to repair and strengthen existing concrete highways, extending their service life and improving ride quality. Many states are now retrofitting older highways with epoxy-coated dowel bars to restore load transfer capabilities across transverse joints and cracks.

The Dowel Bar Retrofit Process:

1. Slot Cutting: The process begins by cutting a series of slots (typically three in each wheel path) across existing transverse joints or cracks. This is done with precision using ganged diamond saws.
2. Concrete Removal: The concrete within the slots is carefully removed using lightweight jackhammers to avoid damaging the surrounding pavement.
3. Bar Placement: Epoxy-coated dowel bars, fitted with dowel bar caps on one end, are placed into the newly created slots. Chairs or clips are used to ensure the bars are held in the correct position and alignment.
4. Backfilling: The slots are then backfilled with a high-strength, rapid-set grout material, which secures the bars in place.
5. Joint Sealing: The original joints or cracks are resealed with a waterproof caulk to prevent moisture intrusion.
6. Diamond Grinding: The final step involves diamond-grinding the surface. This removes any excess grout and smooths out any unevenness between the concrete panels, resulting in a significantly improved ride for motorists.
