Turf-Tec Double Ring Infiltrometer
Turf-Tec Infiltrometer Easy to use Double Ring Infiltrometer. Another first from Turf-Tec International.
Turf-Tec has finally answered the age old question, "How do I measure Infiltration rate?" The Turf-Tec Infiltrometer is simple to operate and easy to use. Measure infiltration rate in 15 minutes.
Now for the first time a field instrument to measure the rate of water infiltration on all areas. This instrument measures the water flowing down through the turf and soil.
Elapsed time indicator allows you to correlate irrigation time to your turf’s infiltration rate. Record keeping of Infiltrometer readings will help you track changes in water percolation.
Has double ring accuracy. The Infiltrometer has been used by 100’s of Colleges, Universities and Government agency’s. Trusted and reliable and made to last.
Turf-Tec has many ways to perform infiltration tests.
Now used by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) for urban runoff and some states DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) for storm water soil evaluations. Note some states may require 6 and 12 inch rings or 12 and 24 inch Infiltration rings (ASTM 3385) as regulations change from state to state - If larger rings are required the Turf-Tec Infiltrometer is still very useful in "qualifying" the site that all soils are alike (confirmatory testing) and have consistent infiltration rates, so fewer large infiltration tests can be performed on larger test sites.
What is a Double Ring Infiltrometer?
A Double Ring Infiltrometer is a must have tool to measure the rate of water infiltration into the soil. This instrument has two concentric rings – an inner ring and an outer ring – that are inserted into the soil to about 15cm deep. The inner ring is filled with water and a constant head is maintained by a Mariotte tubes and reservoir to ensure a steady flow rate. The outer ring is also filled with water but at a lower level to create a one dimensional vertical flow under the inner ring. This design eliminates the horizontal infiltration errors that can occur with single ring infiltrometers and gives more accurate measurement of the soil’s infiltration rate.
Features
Turf-Tec Double Ring Infiltrometers consist of the following components:
-
Inner and Outer Rings: The inner ring is 12 inches in diameter and the outer ring is 24 inches in diameter. Both are made of galvanized steel with a double thick top edge and beveled bottom for easy insertion into the soil.
-
Constant-Head Mariotte Tubes and Reservoir: This reservoir maintains a constant head of water in the inner ring to ensure a steady flow rate during the test.
-
Adjusting Tube Seal: This allows for precise control of the water level inside the infiltrometer ring to adjust the flow rate.
-
Rubber Splash Guards: These guards prevent water from splashing out of the rings during the test to keep the water levels stable.
-
Centering Pins: These pins ensure the inner and outer rings are aligned during the test which is critical for accurate measurements.
How to Use the Turf-Tec Double Ring Infiltrometer
Using Turf-Tec Double Ring Infiltrometers is easy. Follow these steps to measure the infiltration rate:
-
Prepare the Site: Choose a flat area of soil with minimal disturbance to get accurate results.
-
Assemble the Infiltrometer: Attach the inner and outer rings to the driving plate and connect the replacement Mariotte tubes and reservoir to the inner ring.
-
Drive the Rings into the Soil: Use the driving plate to insert the rings into the soil to about 15cm deep.
-
Fill the Rings with Water: Fill the inner ring with water to a known height and the outer ring to a lower level.
-
Measure the Infiltration Rate: Monitor the water level in the inner ring over time using the adjusting tube seal to maintain a constant head.
-
Record the Data: Record the infiltration rate data, time, water level and flow rate.

Uses
-
The Turf-Tec Double Ring Infiltrometer is used to measure saturated hydraulic conductivity a key parameter in hydrological modeling and many agricultural and engineering applications.
-
To understand how soil structure affects rates of infiltration which is relevant to irrigation management and hydrological modeling.
-
To see how soil surface conditions affect the infiltration rate during an infiltration event and how complex and non-homogeneous soil is as a medium.
Benefits
The Turf-Tec Double Ring Infiltrometer has:
-
Accurate: Double ring design gives precise infiltration rate measurements to understand soil behaviour and make informed decisions.
-
Easy to use: Simple to assemble and operate makes it a field testing tool.
-
Versatile: Suitable for soil science, hydrology and environmental engineering.
-
Cost effective: Compared to other methods the Turf-Tec Double Ring Infiltrometer is a cost friendly way to measure rates of infiltration.
The Turf-Tec Double Ring Infiltrometer can be used in:
-
Soil Science: Measure soil rates of infiltration to understand soil behaviour and inform agricultural practices.
-
Hydrology: See how water moves through the soil to understand hydrological processes and manage water resources.
-
Environmental Engineering: See how human activities affect soil infiltration rates to make environmental management decisions.
-
Liquid Waste Disposal: Measure infiltration rates of liquid waste to design liquid waste disposal systems.
-
Reservoir Leakage: Measure infiltration rates in reservoirs to develop reservoir management systems.
By knowing the infiltration rates in different situations professionals can make better decisions on soil management, water resources and environmental protection.
