Drierite Desiccant, Desiccators, 8 Mesh, 5lb Jar

Seedburo dessicators are used for fast drying of prepared samples and as anaerobic culture jars. Dessicators are fast so they are essential for moisture control in many applications. The increased drying capacity of Drierite desiccants is due to a combined chemical and capillary action, so they are great for low moisture levels. The chemical process of making the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate shows how well Drierite works for moisture absorption for both gases and liquids. Drierite (sulfuric acid, phosphorous pentoxide, calcium chloride and silica gel) can be used repeatedly and safely in Seedburo jars. For long term vacuum storage all surfaces must be clean and greased with a silicone-based vacuum grease (SD200G). Each dessicator comes with a porcelain plate.

  • Ship wt:23lbs, Ship dims: 15” (L) x 15” (W) x 19” (H). Granular forms of Drierite can weigh approximately 65 pounds per cubic foot, which is important for understanding its bulk density and drying performance.

  • Plate only: Ship wt:3lbs, Ship dims: 15” (L) x 15” (W) x 4” (H).

Drierite Indicating DesiccantThis desiccant is made from gypsum (calcium sulfate) and is a general purpose drying agent. As it absorbs moisture the desiccant changes from blue to pink in color and can absorb 6-10% of its weight in water depending on the relative humidity. Data from the National Bureau of Standards verifies the effectiveness of Drierite in low moisture levels in gases. Data from the National Bureau of Standards supports the claims of Drierite’s effectiveness as a drying agent. Made from >98% CalciumSulfate and < 2% Cobalt Chloride. Drierite is available in several granular forms, from powder to larger granules, each for different drying applications.

What is Drierite Desiccant?

Drierite desiccant is a natural mineral, gypsum (Calcium Sulfate), known for its fast drying. This all purpose agent is great for removing moisture from air, industrial gases, refrigerants, organic liquids and solids. By keeping a dry atmosphere in storage spaces, vaults and commercial packages Drierite desiccant protects hygroscopic materials and those that are prone to mildew, corrosion, rust or other forms of deterioration caused by high humidity. It’s great for hygroscopic materials that are prone to mildew, corrosion and rust. This includes other forms of deterioration such as corrosion and rust that can severely degrade materials. Its versatility and effectiveness makes it an essential tool in many industrial and storage applications.

What are Desiccators?

Desiccators are devices or materials used to control humidity and prevent moisture contamination in many applications. By absorbing or removing moisture from the air desiccators create a dry environment needed for storing sensitive materials, equipment and products. They are used in industries such as pharmaceuticals, electronics and food processing to maintain a controlled atmosphere so as not to damage and ensure the integrity of stored items.

Characteristics and Benefits

Drierite have several characteristics and benefits that makes them an economical and versatile means of controlling humidity. They have high water capacity, can absorb up to 6.6 weight percent water through chemical action, forming the hemihydrate. There is little change in the efficiency of Drierite even when exposed to 100°C, so it’s stable. The capacity varies inversely with temperature and directly with pressure and the partial pressure of water vapor. Drierite are reusable, a cost effective solution for long term humidity control. The National Bureau of Standards has verified the low moisture levels achieved by Drierite, so it’s effective.Desiccators come in different types to fit different applications. Indicating Drierite for example changes color when it absorbs moisture, a visual cue for replacement. Non-indicating Drierite does not change color. Desiccators also come in different forms, granular, powder or cartridge so you can choose the right one for your humidity control needs. Drierite desiccants come in several varieties each designed to address specific drying challenges.

What are Dessicators?

Dessicators are devices or materials used to control humidity and prevent moisture contamination in many applications. By absorbing or removing moisture from the air, gases or liquids, dessicators create a dry environment which is critical in many industries where moisture can damage, deteriorate or contaminate products, equipment or materials. Whether in laboratories, storage facilities or industrial processes, dessicators are essential to ensure the integrity and longevity of sensitive items.

Types of Dessicators

There are many types of dessicators:

  • SD200P: SD200 DesiccatorReplacement190mm Porcelain Plate

  • SD250P: SD250 DesiccatorReplacement230mm Porcelain Plate

  • SD1: Drierite Indicating Desiccant, 8 Mesh, 1lb Jar

  • SD5: Drierite Indicating Desiccant, 8 Mesh, 5lb Jar

They can dry air to -100°F dew point and reduce moisture in organic liquids to low ppm. They are highly effective in preventing moisture contamination in spaces, vaults and commercial packages. Their reliability and efficiency makes them a must have in many industries to control humidity and protect sensitive materials.

Desiccator Forms and Efficiency

Drierite come in granular, powder and cartridge forms. The form comes in sizes from powder to 4mesh (1/4 inch drierite granules) for removing the last traces of moisture from liquids and as an additive in polymer formulations. The powder form is good for removing moisture from liquids and as an additive in polymer formulations. These are designed to maintain a dry environment for various materials. The cartridge form is for drying displacement air entering storage drums, -100°F dew point. Drierite are efficient, moisture in gases dried with Drierite at 25°C - 30°C is as low as 0.005 mg/liter.

Desiccator Forms and Efficiency with Desiccants

Desiccators come in many forms: granules, powders and cartridges. The efficiency of a desiccator is determined by its capacity which is the amount of moisture it can absorb. For example Drierite desiccators have a capacity of 10-14% for gases and 6.6% for liquids. The capacity varies with temperature and directly with pressure and the pressure of vapor. Knowing these will help you choose the right desiccator for your application.

Maintenance and Replacement

Regular maintenance and replacement of desiccators is important to get optimal performance. For example Drierite changes color from blue to pink when it becomes saturated with moisture, so you know when to replace it. This visual indicator prevents moisture contamination by ensuring you replace the desiccator promptly and maintain a dry environment.

Capacity and Regeneration

The capacity of desiccants varies with temperature and pressure and pressure of vapor, making them excellent agents for gases, liquids and other substances. Drierite is made from the natural mineral gypsum which has a high water of 10-14% when drying gases. This increased capacity is due to a combination of chemical and capillary action allowing for fast drying and moisture removal from spaces and enclosures.

Drierite granules have 38% pore space volume which accounts for the additional capacity and is suitable for various applications including formulations and commercial packages. The capacity of Drierite also depends on the size of the granules, with popular granule sizes being 200 mesh, 20-40 mesh, 10-20 mesh, 8 mesh, 6 mesh and 4 mesh each with its own characteristics and uses.

Both regular Drierite can be regenerated many times for reuse, making them economical and efficient solution for drying problems. Regeneration involves heating the desiccant to a high temperature, typically between 400°F to 450°F to release the absorbed moisture and restore the desiccant to its original condition. The temperature at which Drierite are regenerated is critical in restoring its capacity and efficiency, lower temperatures require longer heating time or vacuum to achieve complete dehydration.Du-Cal Drierite and other Drierite can be regenerated same way, to restore the desiccant to its original condition and maintain its drying ability. By knowing the capacity and regeneration of desiccants you can use them efficiently and fast dry air, gases, refrigerants, liquids, solids and protect materials and prevent deterioration due to high humidity and moisture.
