Concrete Pressure Meters: Exact Air Measurement in Concrete
Air Measurement
Air measurement is a big part of concrete testing as it directly affects the durability and workability of the concrete. Concrete air meters are designed to measure the entrained air in freshly mixed concrete which is very important for quality and consistency of the concrete. Entrained air means the tiny air bubbles that are intentionally introduced into the concrete mix to improve its workability and durability. Concrete air meters is very important in the construction industry as it helps to prevent defects and ensure the concrete meets the required standards.
Exact Air Pressure Meter Measurement
The Exact-air pressure air meter is used to test the content in a fresh sample. The test method is based on Boyle’s Law and releases a known volume of air at a known pressure into the concrete sample which contains an unknown volume of air. The resulting change in the sample’s volume is directly related to the air in the sample and can be read directly from the gauge. Made from the highest quality components for years of service. Includes Exact-air™ pressure pump, stainless steel gauge. The brass pump builds test pressure rapidly with fewer strokes, more efficient. The check valve eliminates issues commonly found with 'o'-ring seals, more reliable. Meets ASTM C-231, AASHTO T-152, BS-1881.
Meets Test Methods: AASHTO T152, ASTM C231. Buy NIST 46H Portland Cement Fineness Standard for ASTM C430/AASHTO T 192 sieve correction.
What is Entrainment of Air in Concrete?
Concrete air entrainment is the process of introducing tiny entrained air bubbles into the concrete mix to improve its durability and workability. This is done by using air-entraining admixtures which lower the surface tension of the mixing water allowing for the formation of stable air bubbles within the concrete. The entrained air acts as internal reservoirs to accommodate the expansion of water upon freezing and relieve internal air pressure and prevent cracking. By having the right amount of entrained air, fresh samples can withstand harsh weather conditions and maintain its structure over time. Design improvements in air meters help minimize areas that trap and hold concrete, reducing maintenance and repair issues.
Using a pressure meter is very important to get the right air amount in fresh samples. The benefits are:
-
Accurate Measurement: Gives you precise air content readings in fresh concrete, meets specifications.
-
Compliance: Meets industry standards for air content in concrete, ASTM and AASHTO.
-
Defect Prevention: Prevents honeycombing and surface imperfections by verifying air content.
-
Longevity: Gets the right air content for strength and durability of concrete structures. Maintenance and repair problems are greatly reduced due to design features.
-
Speed: Gives quick and accurate results, a must have on the construction site. The brass pump builds test pressure with fewer strokes.

Tamping Rods for Slump Cone Test have hemispherical tips and for use when compacting concrete specimens in tests that include slump, air voids and air strength as well as the unit weight measure. The kit includes a tamping rod strike for accurate sample preparation.
Replacement Gauges in Meter Parts are quality gauges that fit most Type B Concrete Air Entrainment Meter. These gauges feature self-locking clamps that ensure a proper seal between the lid and the base, enhancing reliability.
Replacement Air Pump fits Gilson Concrete Pressure Air Meter (and other manufacturers) with solid construction that lasts longer. The smooth sloped top design facilitates easy cleaning and prevents water and concrete accumulation. For more replacement parts, see our concreteair meterreplacement parts page. The air meter has a watertight seal for accurate results and reliability.
Applications
Concrete air meters have many uses in the construction industry. Used to measure air in freshly concrete to ensure it meets specs. Content in concrete is critical as it affects workability and durability of the concrete. Used in building construction, road construction, bridge construction and in labs and testing facilities to test concrete samples. Alongside concrete air meters, moisture meters for concrete are also essential tools for accurate assessment in construction projects. Concrete air meters are essential to ensure concrete meets specs and prevents defects and reduces maintenance costs. Some of the uses of concrete air meters:
-
Measure air amount in freshly mixed concrete
-
Ensure concrete meets specs
-
Prevent defects and reduce maintenance costs
-
Improve workability and durability of concrete
-
Test concrete samples in labs and testing facilitiesConcrete air meters are specified in various standards including ASTM C231 and AASHTO T152. These standards outline the use of concrete air meters and ensure results are accurate and reliable. Concrete air meters come in different types, including Type B Concrete Air Meters which measure entrained air in freshly mixed concrete. The Gilson Concrete Air Meter is a Type B Concrete Air Meter, known for its accuracy and reliability.

The pump has a large, easy-grip handle that builds pressure in the meter quickly and is shielded to keep dirt and water out of the piston area. Brass petcocks have stainless steel ball valves for accuracy and durability and vinyl-coated handles for comfortable opening and closing. Stainless steel clamps are long-lasting and easy to adjust and less expensive to replace. Heat-treated cast aluminum base has a total volume of 1/4ft³ and can also be used for unit weight and yield determinations. Gilson offers the widest range of gauge types for Type B Air Meters in the industry, including Gorilla Gauge, stainless steel American-made gauge and digital gauge. Every gauge exceeds ASTM and AASHTO requirements.
-
Options vary only by gauge type. HM-30 comes with the exclusive Gilson Gorilla Gauge, HM-30S comes with stainless steel American-made gauge and HM-30D comes with digital gauge. Gorilla Gauge is ANSI-rated B40 Grade 2A with accuracy ±0.5% at full scale. Gauge has dual-layer safety glass lens sealed behind a threaded bezel with O-Ring. HM-30S has an American-made gauge with stainless steel housing and easy, dependable operation. Gauge is accurate to ±1% at full scale. HM-30D has a digital gauge with polycarbonate and ABS plastic. HM-30D gauge has IP67-rated enclosure that is weatherproof and encased by a protective rubber boot. Digital Gauge has backlit LCD screen and is highly accurate with % air of ±0.25% at full scale.
Standard
ASTM C231 is the standard to follow when testing air content in fresh samples with a Concrete Air Meter. The full range of Concrete Air Meters includes multiple gauge options to meet industry standards and provide more accuracy. This standard provides consistency and reproducibility of testing so you have a basis to evaluate concrete mixes and air entraining admixtures. Using a concrete air meter is required to meet industry standards so your concrete structure and fresh concrete mixes, for a strong product every time. =
