The Asphalt Institute Vacuum Viscometer, Size 100, is a specialized laboratory instrument designed for determining the absolute viscosity of highly viscous materials, most notably asphalt binders (bitumen), at a standard temperature of 140°F (60°C). How it Works: The viscometer operates on the principle of capillary tube viscometry under vacuum. A preheated, 3mL liquid sample is introduced into the viscometer. A controlled vacuum is then applied to one end of the instrument, drawing the liquid through a precisely calibrated capillary tube. The time it takes for the leading edge of the liquid to pass between two marked points on the capillary is measured in seconds. This elapsed time is then multiplied by the viscometer's unique calibration constant (provided on the included Certificate of Calibration) to calculate the absolute viscosity in units of poise.

The Constant Temperature Viscosity Bath is also a critical, separately purchased component, as maintaining the precise 140°F (60°C) temperature is crucial for accurate and repeatable results.
