The Asphalt Bulk Specific Gravity Device is the fastest and most accurate method for determining the bulk specific gravity of 4in and 6in (102mm and 151mm) asphalt cores and gyratory specimens. Using a computer-controlled system (patent pending), it measures water displacement with superior resolution and accuracy, making it an essential tool for any asphalt testing laboratory.

Unlike traditional methods, it uses no consumable products, allowing users to perform more than twice as many tests in the same amount of time. This enhanced method also greatly improves repeatability between operators, reducing the potential for human error and ensuring consistent, reliable results. The recently published AASHTO TP 82 Provisional Specification provides guidance for the operation of this unit.

How It Works

The Asphalt Bulk Specific Gravity Device is incredibly easy to use. Simply enter the sample information and the weight of the dry asphalt specimen into the proprietary software program, which comes preloaded on the included computer. Then, lower the sample into the water-filled measuring chamber. The system will accurately measure water displacement with 0.5cc resolution and a repeatability of ±1cc. Within seconds, the bulk specific gravity is displayed directly on the computer screen, saving time, improving accuracy, and eliminating inconsistencies created by the subjective SSD drying process. Test data can easily be exported to a spreadsheet or printer for documentation.
