AMS 300 Dual Mass Penetrometer: Dynamic Cone Model

The AMS 300 Dual Mass Dynamic Cone Penetrometer is an Army Corps of Engineers tool. This is a fast and cost effective way to get the in-situ CBR of pavement base, subbase and subgrades. State/county/city highway departments and geotech firms need this. Dynamic cone penetrometers are the way to go for in-situ testing. Kit comes with a lot of disposable cones, makes it very user friendly.

The AMS 300 Dual Mass Dynamic Cone Penetrometer measures soil shear strength with CBR 0.5-100% and bearing value 430-10,800 psf. It can test to 30” depth and can be extended to 6’ with optional drive rods and extensions. Meets ASTM D6951 specifications for reliable and consistent results. Steel extension shaft assembly for in-situ soil testing.

Comes with a chart to compute CBR. Also includes an Excel spreadsheet template to chart the test results, saves time for the operator. Covers wide CBR range and can test various soil types. Additional disposable cones can be purchased separately if existing cones are hard to extract.

The AMS 300 Dual Mass Dynamic Cone Penetrometer Kit comes with a stainless steel dual-mass hammer, 17.6/10.1 lb. The dual mass DCP hammer is high quality and reliable with easy grip design for user friendly. Includes cone adapters to attach disposable or multi-use cones to lower drive rods. Quick-connect upper rod, 30” drive rod (27-1/4” penetration), 40” vertical scale and all other necessary components for smooth and accurate testing. Hammer flange is machined with finger grip for easy and non-slip lifting during testing. Outer sleeve can be removed from the hammer to convert to single mass unit for testing weaker soils. Threaded connection to prevent energy loss during hammer blows. Threaded connections to provide tight fit to prevent energy loss during tests. Threaded coupling system ensures durable and secure connection between drive rods and extensions. Maintaining hammer blow energy is critical for accurate soil testing results. Single mass configuration gives better testing results especially for foundation evaluation and when soil strength is compromised.

Transporting and storing is easy with the crush-proof Pelican carrying case with transport wheels and wrench set. The penetrometer will be protected and intact during transport.

For more information on the application and maintenance of the AMS 300 Dual Mass Dynamic Cone Penetrometer, see the manual. Manual is a great resource for the user to guide and support testing.

For accurate and fast soil testing, get the AMS 300 Dual Mass Dynamic Cone Penetrometer. With its features, reliability and user friendly, this kit is a must have for any road construction or geotech project. Get your project done with the AMS 300 Dual Mass Dynamic Cone Penetrometer.

Device Description

The Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) is a portable geotechnical field tool to measure soil properties that correlate with field California Bearing Ratio (CBR) values. A must have for in-situ CBR values of pavement base, subbase and subgrades. The DCP has a drive hammer and a steel extension shaft assembly with a 60° hardened cone tip at one end. The cone tip is driven into the pavement or subgrade using a sliding dual mass hammer to get consistent and accurate measurement of soil shear strength. This setup allows for precise soil condition evaluation, a valuable tool for geotech and road construction projects.

Technical Details

  • Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP): Measures in-situ CBR values of pavement base, subbase and subgrades.

  • Dual Mass Hammer: Sliding hammer that drives the cone tip into the pavement or subgrade, consistent hammer blow energy.

  • Steel Extension Shaft Assembly: Hardened cone tip at one end, for accurate testing.

  • 60° Hardened Cone Tip: Tip of the steel extension shaft assembly, to penetrate the pavement or subgrade.

  • Threaded Connections: Optional, for easy and secure connection to other equipment, for energy transfer.

  • Weak Soils: Soils with low CBR values that requires single mass unit for testing.

  • Outer Sleeve: Part of the dual mass hammer that can be removed to convert DCP to single mass unit, for testing weak soils.

  • Bearing Values Ranging: DCP can measure bearing values from 430 to 10,800 psf.

  • CBR Values: DCP can measure CBR values from 0.5 to 100%.

  • Compute CBR Values: Chart included with DCP to compute CBR values.

  • Excel Spreadsheet Template: Included with DCP to chart test results.

  • ASTM D6951 Specifications: Meets these specifications for reliable and consistent results.

  • Quick-Connect End: Easy and secure connection to other equipment.

Dynamic Cone

The Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) is available in two models: SF-20 Dual-Mass Hammer Dynamic Cone Penetrometer and SF-10 Single Mass Hammer Dynamic Cone Penetrometer. The SF-20 is for soils with CBR values from 0.5 to 100, suitable for various soil conditions. Includes crush-resistant Pelican carrying case with transport wheels, dual mass hammer driving assembly, 30-inch lower drive rod, hardened multi-use cone and 25 disposable cones with adapter. Ideal for comprehensive soil testing in different environments.

While the SF-10 is an economy set for occasional use in areas where weak soils are not common. It measures shear strength in soils with CBR values from 10 to 100. Includes hardened point, 2 pin and clip sets, manual, USB flash drive with software and Excel template and 3-in-1 oil. Ideal for users who need a reliable and affordable soil testing solution.

With these two models, you have the right tool for the job. Whether you test various soil conditions or strong soils.
