Windsor Probe Test System (Standard): Windsor Probe Chart

The Windsor Probe Test System is a non-destructive concrete testing solution used to estimate the compressive strength of hardened concrete. The updated system complies with ASTM C803/C803M requirements, ensuring accurate, safe, and repeatable field testing. It is widely used in construction quality control and structural verification.

For enhanced operator safety, the driver can only be released by applying firm pressure to the actuating template. The enlarged template protects against debris, and the system cannot discharge unless sufficient force is applied during testing.

System Components and Accessories

Each system is supplied in a portable carrying case that includes the driver, actuating templates, and accessories required for accurate probe positioning and measurement. A Moh’s Hardness of Coarse Aggregate Kit is included to support proper calibration.

Probes are sold separately in kits or cases of 25 kits. Each probe kit contains three probes, three adapters, and three power loads to complete one test. Additional probes and consumables are available under Concrete Testing Equipment and Concrete Testing Accessories.

Concrete Strength Verification

Before approving steel erection, contractors must verify that concrete in footings and walls has reached the required strength. This verification is commonly performed using Windsor Probe / Pin Testing along with proper calibration procedures.

The Windsor Probe Test System measures concrete strengths up to 17,000 psi (110 MPa), making it suitable for structural integrity assessment and compliance testing.

Standard vs. Digital Test Systems

Standard Test System

The Standard Test System is a cost-effective option for users with basic testing requirements. It includes a manual depth gauge and a printed Windsor Probe Chart to estimate concrete strength. Measurements are taken in inches and millimeters.

Digital Test System

The Digital Test System features electronic data acquisition for improved accuracy and faster testing. Users enter aggregate hardness and concrete type, position the measuring unit over each probe, and record depth readings electronically.

The system automatically averages probe measurements, calculates compressive strength in psi or MPa, and stores results with date and time. Data can be transferred to a PC using included software cables. Standard systems can be upgraded using the WP-700 Electronic Measuring Upgrade.

Note: Cannot be shipped outside the United States.

How the Windsor Probe Test Works

The system uses a powder-actuated driver to fire steel probes into the concrete surface. The average penetration depth of three probes is measured and correlated to compressive strength using validated regression models.

This testing method provides reliable results across various surface conditions and is suitable for both fresh and mature concrete, including high-performance mixes.

Probe Types

Gold probes are used for lightweight concrete below 125 lb/cu ft, while silver probes are intended for standard and high-performance concrete. Compatible options are listed under Windsor Probe Accessories.

Benefits and Applications

  • Fast, non-destructive concrete strength testing
  • Accurate correlation to compressive strength
  • Safe operation with no recoil
  • Meets ASTM C803/C803M standards

For fresh concrete air content testing, use the Concrete Pressure Meter (Type B Air Meter) as a complementary solution.
