Type K Teflon Thermocouple Wire, 20 AWG (100ft Roll) - K20-1-507
This high-performance Type K Teflon Thermocouple Wire is essential for accurately transmitting temperature signals from a thermocouple sensor to a readout or control device. Sold in convenient 100ft rolls, this 20 AWG wire ensures signal integrity and reliability in a wide range of industrial and laboratory applications.
What is Thermocouple Extension Wire?
Thermocouple extension wire is a critical component in temperature measurement systems. Its function is to extend the signal path from the thermocouple probe to the instrumentation without introducing errors. To maintain accuracy, the extension wire's composition must precisely match the metallurgical properties of the thermocouple it is paired with. For Type K thermocouples, this means one conductor is made of Chromel® and the other of Alumel®.
If a mismatched wire (like standard copper) is used, it can create an unwanted thermocouple junction at the connection point, leading to significant temperature reading inaccuracies.
Key Features of this Type K Wire:
- Type: K (Chromel®/Alumel®), one of the most versatile and widely used thermocouple types.
- Insulation: FEP (Teflon), providing excellent resistance to chemicals, moisture, abrasion, and high temperatures up to 200°C (400°F).
- Gauge: 20 AWG, a durable gauge that balances flexibility with mechanical strength.
- Length: 100-foot roll, perfect for custom installations and long-distance connections.
- Compliance: Meets ASTM/ANSI designations for calibration, ensuring consistent and reliable performance.
Thermocouple Wire vs. RTD Cable
It's important to differentiate between thermocouple wire and the cable used for RTD sensors.
- Thermocouple Systems: Require specific extension wire (like this Type K) that matches the sensor's legs to transmit a millivolt signal.
- RTD Systems: Use standard copper instrumentation cable, as they measure changes in resistance, not a voltage signal.
In both systems, if a transmitter is installed directly in the sensor head, it converts the sensor's signal to a standardized 4-20mA current loop. In this case, standard copper wire can be used to run the signal back to the control equipment, as the sensitive thermocouple signal has already been converted.
Pyromation offers a comprehensive selection of thermocouple grade and extension wires in various gauges and insulation types. We also provide special constructions, multi-pair cables, and wire insulators to meet the specific demands of your application.
