Understanding Thermocouple Extension Wire

Thermocouple extension wire is specifically designed to extend the connection between a thermocouple probe and the instrumentation that reads the signal. To maintain accuracy, the extension wire's material composition must precisely match the positive and negative legs of the thermocouple type being used. This Type J wire is made from Iron (+) and Constantan (-), ensuring it seamlessly integrates with any Type J thermocouple sensor.

Using a mismatched wire (like standard copper wire) can introduce errors in the temperature reading because it creates an unwanted thermoelectric junction.

When to Use Thermocouple Wire vs. Copper Wire

• Thermocouple Extension Wire: Use this wire to carry the direct millivolt (mV) signal from the sensor to the readout device.
• Copper Instrumentation Cable: If your sensor assembly includes a transmitter that converts the thermocouple's signal into a standardized (4 to 20) mA signal, you can use ordinary copper wire to carry this amplified signal to your process control equipment. This is also the standard for RTD sensors.
