Product Overview Thermocouples are industry-leading sensors for temperature measurement, prized for their versatility, convenience, and wide-ranging capabilities in industrial, commercial, and scientific applications. They function by converting thermal energy (heat) into a readable electrical signal, which is then used as a crucial input for process controllers, recorders, and data loggers.
How Thermocouples Work The fundamental principle of a thermocouple involves the Seebeck effect. It consists of two wires made from different metals, which are joined together at one end to form a "hot" or measuring junction. The opposite end is the reference or "cold" junction. When the hot junction is exposed to heat, a temperature gradient is created along the wires, generating a small voltage, or Electromotive Force (EMF). This EMF is measured at the reference end and can be precisely correlated to the temperature at the measuring junction, based on standardized calibration tables.
By carefully selecting specific metal alloys and protective sheath materials, thermocouples can be engineered to operate across an exceptionally broad temperature spectrum, from cryogenic lows of -200°C (-328°F) to extreme highs of 2316°C (4200°F).
