Saybolt Viscometer Orifice for Petroleum Viscosity Testing
The Saybolt Viscometer Universal Orifice regulates flow and threads into Viscometer Tube in the Saybolt Viscometer for determining viscosity of petroleum liquids. The Universal Orifice, also known as a standard orifice, is made of stainless steel. For heavier-grade petroleum during viscosity testing, the Saybolt Viscometer Road Oil Orifice is also available. It comes with orifice wrench.
Saybolt tubes and saybolt viscometer tubes are used to hold samples during viscosity testing, to be compatible with the universal orifice for accurate and standardized measurements.

Saybolt Viscometer Universal Orifice Introduction
The Saybolt viscometers Universal Orifice is the most widely used orifice in Saybolt viscometers and is used to measure viscosity of petroleum liquids across a wide temperature range from ambient to 464°F (240°C). As an essential tool for laboratory and industrial applications, the Universal Orifice is engineered to deliver consistent and reliable results. Its main function is to allow a controlled volume of fluid to flow through a calibrated orifice and record the flow time in Saybolt Universal Seconds (SUS). This standardized measurement can then be converted to kinematic viscosity, a valuable metric for quality control and product specification in the petroleum industry. The Universal Orifice is designed to be compatible with various petroleum liquids and supports viscosity determination at low and high temperatures, making it a must have for applications that require accuracy and repeatability.
Principle of Operation and Components
The Saybolt Viscometer is based on efflux time measurement where the viscosity of a sample is determined by timing how long it takes for a set volume of fluid to flow through a calibrated orifice. The viscometer has a constant temperature bath which ensures temperature control within ±0.05°F (±0.03°C) throughout the entire operating range. The insulated bath interior is made of heavy-gauge stainless steel which provides excellent chemical resistance and temperature stability for accurate viscosity determination.A chemical resistant top plate allows for easy cleaning and maintenance, the built-in overflow pipe and drain valve makes filling and draining the bath easier and reduces the risk of spills and makes operation more efficient. The integrated cooling coil allows operation at near ambient temperatures using tap water or refrigerated coolant which is ideal for tests that require quick temperature stabilization. Brookfield DV2T Viscometer is a high-precision instrument designed for accurate viscosity measurement.
For added usability the viscometer has four thermometer supports and four port covers to ensure accurate temperature readings and the bath remains sealed during operation. Sliding draft shields and specimen area backlighting improves visibility and protects the sample area making it easier to observe and record results. The entire system comes with all necessary accessories including a calibrated orifice to make precise and repeatable viscosity measurements.
