What is a Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD)?

Resistance Temperature Detectors, also known as resistance thermometers, are sensors used to measure temperature with exceptional accuracy, repeatability, and stability. They operate on the principle that the electrical resistance of certain metals changes predictably as a function of temperature.

How They Work: An RTD works by passing a small, stable electrical current through a sensing element. As the surrounding temperature changes, the element's electrical resistance also changes. This resistance is then measured, and a precise temperature reading is calculated based on the known resistance-temperature relationship of the element's material.

Construction and Design: The core of an RTD is its sensing element, which is typically made from platinum, nickel, or copper. Platinum is the most common material due to its highly linear and stable resistance-temperature relationship over a broad range. The element is constructed by either winding a fine wire around a ceramic or glass core (wire-wound) or by depositing a thin layer of metal onto a ceramic substrate (thin-film). This element is then encased in a protective sheath, often made of stainless steel or another corrosion-resistant alloy, to shield it from environmental damage.

Lead Wire Configurations (2, 3, and 4-Wire): Since RTDs have a low base resistance (commonly 100 Ω for Pt100 models), the resistance of the connecting lead wires can introduce errors into the temperature measurement. To counteract this, RTDs are available in different wiring configurations:

  • 2-Wire: The simplest and most economical, but least accurate, as it includes the lead wire resistance in the measurement.
  • 3-Wire (Most Common): This configuration uses a third wire to measure the resistance of the lead wires, allowing the measuring instrument to compensate for it. This provides a good balance of accuracy and cost for most industrial applications.
  • 4-Wire: Offers the highest accuracy by using two wires to carry the excitation current and two separate wires to measure the voltage across the RTD element. This completely eliminates any effect of lead wire resistance and is used in laboratory and high-precision applications.

Operating Range: With appropriate element selection and protective sheathing, RTDs are capable of operating reliably across a wide temperature spectrum, typically from -200°C to 600°C (-328°F to 1112°F).
