Product Overview Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) are the industry standard for high-precision temperature measurement, offering exceptional accuracy, repeatability, and long-term stability. How RTDs Work RTDs, also known as resistance thermometers, operate on the principle that the electrical resistance of certain metals changes predictably with temperature. This sensor features a platinum element (Pt100), which has a resistance of 100 ohms at 0°C. A small, stable excitation current is passed through the element. The resulting voltage drop across the resistor is measured, and this value is converted into a precise temperature reading.

The sensing element is typically either a wire-wound coil or a thin-film layer deposited on a ceramic substrate. It is then encased in a protective ceramic or glass capsule to ensure durability and resistance to vibration and shock.

3-Wire Configuration for Enhanced Accuracy Because the change in resistance is small, the resistance of the connecting lead wires can introduce errors into the measurement. This sensor uses a 3-wire configuration to compensate for this. Two wires carry the measurement current, while the third wire connects to one side of the RTD element, allowing the instrumentation to measure and subtract the lead wire resistance from the total reading, resulting in a significantly more accurate measurement than a 2-wire setup.

Built for Demanding Environments With a durable 316 stainless steel protective sheath, this RTD is designed to operate reliably across a temperature range of -30°C to 200°C (-22°F to 392°F). The 1/4" diameter sheath provides a good balance of durability and response time.
