Precision Temperature Measurement: Pyromation RTDs for HVAC & Industrial Applications
Pyromation offers a comprehensive range of Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) and sensors, ideal for accurate process temperature sensing in HVAC systems and various industrial settings. Explore our 3-wire RTDs, integrated with transmitters for seamless data acquisition.
Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs), also known as resistance thermometers, are precision temperature sensors that leverage the predictable change in electrical resistance of certain metallic elements with temperature. This fundamental principle allows RTDs to provide highly accurate and repeatable temperature measurements.
How RTDs Work: At their core, RTDs consist of a sensing element typically made from platinum, nickel, or copper. As temperature changes, the electrical resistance of this element changes proportionally. A small, constant excitation current is passed through the element, and the resulting voltage drop across it is measured. This voltage, directly proportional to the resistance, is then converted into a precise temperature reading based on the RTD's known calibration curve.
Construction and Design: The RTD sensing element is carefully manufactured by either winding a fine wire (wire-wound elements) or depositing a thin film (thin-film elements) onto a ceramic or glass core. This delicate assembly is then protected within a ceramic or glass capsule, safeguarding it from environmental factors and ensuring long-term stability.
Addressing Lead Wire Resistance: Given that most RTDs have a relatively low initial resistance (commonly 100 ohms for a Pt100) and exhibit a small change in resistance per unit of temperature, even minor resistance in the connecting lead wires can introduce measurement errors. To counteract this, Pyromation's RTDs often utilize three or four-wire bridge configurations. These advanced wiring methods are incorporated into the measuring devices to effectively compensate for lead wire resistance, ensuring superior accuracy, especially over longer distances or in applications requiring high precision.
Exceptional Temperature Range & Versatility: By carefully selecting the appropriate sensing elements and robust protective sheathing, Pyromation RTDs are engineered to operate reliably across an extensive temperature range, typically from -200°C to 600°C (-328°F to 1112°F). This broad capability makes them suitable for a diverse array of applications, from cryogenic temperatures to high-temperature industrial processes.
