The Organic Impurities Test Set is an essential tool for detecting harmful organic materials in fine aggregates. The test involves mixing a sample of fine aggregate with a 3% sodium hydroxide solution in a specially designed graduated colorless glass bottle. After standing for 24 hours, the color of the liquid above the sample is compared to a standard reference color. If it appears darker, it indicates the potential presence of organic compounds, and further testing is recommended before approval.

What's Included in the Test Set

The standard test set comes with the following components:

• Six 8oz (240mL) graduated Impurities Test Bottles with watertight screw-on caps, allowing for precise measurements in both ounce and milliliter units.
• 1lb (454g) of Sodium Hydroxide Pellets, which provide enough material to create a 3% sodium hydroxide solution for performing over 150 tests. For areas requiring strict compliance with ASTM and AASHTO standards, Reagent Grade Sodium Hydroxide Pellets can be ordered separately.
• A Circular Color Reference Disc, featuring five fade-free, solid-glass reference colors (Gardner color scale values 5, 8, 11, 14, and 16) mounted in a durable protective plastic frame.

All individual components can also be purchased separately for convenience.

Color Reference Options

The included HM-815 Color Reference Disc is designed for permanent, reliable use, ensuring fade-free color comparisons over time. For even greater precision, individual Gardner Liquid Color Standards are also available for the same reference colors, all meeting ASTM and AASHTO standards.
