It is crucial that the extension wire material matches the material of the thermocouple's positive and negative legs (e.g., Type K wire for a Type K sensor). Using dissimilar metals will introduce errors in the temperature reading. However, if a transmitter is installed within the sensor assembly, it converts the thermocouple's millivolt signal to a more robust 4-20 mA analog signal. In this case, standard copper instrument wire can be used to transmit the signal back to the process control equipment.
