Micro-Deval Apparatus: Advanced Aggregate Abrasion Testing
The Micro-Deval Apparatus is an advanced, second-generation machine designed to measure the abrasion resistance and durability of mineral aggregates. This state-of-the-art system is essential for quality control in construction materials, providing reliable data on how aggregates will perform under wear and tear.
The Micro-Deval Test Method
The increasingly popular Micro-Deval test is a superior method for determining aggregate quality. It involves placing a sample of fine or coarse aggregate into a sealed stainless steel jar. An abrasive charge, consisting of up to 5,000g of 9.5mm diameter stainless steel balls, is added along with water. The jar is then rotated at a precise 100rpm for a specified duration, typically two hours.
The quality and durability of the aggregate are determined by calculating the percentage loss of mass after the test, based on gradation analysis. Compared to other abrasion testing methods like the Los Angeles (LA) Abrasion test, the Micro-Deval method is simpler, safer, and more cost-effective. It requires smaller equipment, smaller sample sizes, and a more straightforward procedure, making it a highly efficient choice for modern labs.
Superior Design and Safety
Our Micro-Deval Apparatus is engineered for unparalleled precision and safety, setting it apart from other models on the market.
Advanced Electronic Control: A sophisticated electronic controller with an optical sensor system provides exceptional accuracy. It tracks test time, total revolutions, and the RPM of the jars. This allows tests to be controlled by either elapsed time or total revolutions, ensuring the jars stop within a fraction of a single rotation at test completion. This data also serves as a critical verification of the machine's performance.
Unmatched Safety: The jars rotate securely behind transparent Lexan™ doors equipped with safety interlocks. This design ensures that all moving parts are completely enclosed during operation, eliminating the hazards present in other machines that use unguarded open rollers.
Sturdy and Efficient Construction: The apparatus features a robust, two-tier steel frame. Each tier holds a 5L stainless steel jar (194mm ID x 170mm IH) with a secure locking cover. The rubber-covered rollers are powered by a reliable 3/4hp electric motor through a durable gear transmission and chain drive.
Compliance and Specifications
This Micro-Deval machine meets the rigorous requirements of current ASTM, AASHTO, and various Canadian and Texas DOT test methods. It's important to note that this contemporary version should not be confused with older, European-origin Micro-Deval tests, which utilize different equipment and protocols.
