Micro Deval Abrasion Test: Micro-Deval Abrasive Charge

Micro-Deval Abrasive Charge

The Micro-Deval Abrasive Charge is a 5,500g charge of special magnetic stainless steel balls for Micro-Deval abrasion testing exceeding required weight and has extended service life. When used with the Micro-Deval Apparatus, which has a chain drive and gear transmission for precise jar revolution control, the charge ensures accurate and repeatable results.

Micro-Deval Abrasive Charge is 9.5mm (0.375in) diameter stainless steel balls used in Micro-Deval Testing to measure abrasion resistance and durability of mineral aggregates. Used with Series Micro-Deval Apparatus, which is a two tier unit where each tier carries one of the two jars used for testing. The apparatus has advanced safety features such as a locking cover on each jar, fully enclosing all moving parts so that no components are exposed during operation. Charge is 5,500g nominal weight to allow for loss and degradation over time. Ordering additional sets increases sample preparation capacity and significantly reduces testing time.

Features:

  • Stainless steel construction

  • Additional sets increase productivity

  • 5,500g Nominal weight

  • Compatible with two tier unit, two jars configuration

The Micro-Deval Abrasive Charge is made of high quality special magnetic stainless steel that exceeds the required weight for Micro-Deval abrasion testing. With extended service life, this charge will last longer than traditional charges, reducing the need for frequent replacements. The apparatus ensures the jars stop within a fraction of one revolution at test completion, with jar revolution precisely tracked for accuracy and safety.

9.5mm (0.375in) diameter stainless steel balls used in Micro-Deval Testing to measure the abrasion resistance and durability of mineral aggregates. When used with the Micro-Deval Apparatus, which meets current ASTM standards and allows test completion to be determined by either elapsed time or total revolutions, the Micro-Deval Abrasive Charge gives accurate and consistent results. The 5,500g nominal weight of this charge allows for loss and degradation over time. This ensures consistency in testing and gives accurate results. Additional sets of the Micro-Deval Abrasive Charge can greatly increase productivity and reduce testing time. With more sets you can prepare more samples at the same time.

The Micro-Deval Abrasive Charge is made of stainless steel, very durable and corrosion resistant. This will withstand the demands of Micro-Deval testing and remain in good condition for a long time. Please perform the test according to the full protocol, with water present during the abrasion process for valid results.

Whether you are a research facility, construction company or quality control department, the Micro-Deval Abrasive Charge is an essential tool to evaluate the abrasion resistance and durability of mineral aggregates. Its reliability and consistency, plus extended service life makes it a valuable asset for any testing operation. Gradation results are used to determine aggregate quality and percentage loss is calculated from these results – low loss means high durability and resistance to abrasion. The apparatus also has machine performance benefits such as precise control and monitoring of test parameters.

Get the Micro-Deval Abrasive Charge and increase productivity, reduce testing time and get accurate results you can rely on.

Abrasion Testing

Abrasion testing is an important part of evaluating mineral aggregates which are used in construction projects from roadways to concrete structures. Among the various test methods available, the test is a reliable and widely accepted method to evaluate the resistance and durability of both coarse and fine aggregate samples.

This test is performed using a micro deval apparatus, engineered to give precise and repeatable results. This test involves placing an aggregate sample into a sealed stainless steel jar along with an abrasive charge – typically stainless steel balls – and water. The jar is then rotated at a controlled speed, usually 100 rpm, for a set test duration, commonly 2 hours. The micro deval machine has an electronic controller and an optical sensing system, allowing accurate monitoring of test time, total revolutions and speed data. This ensures the test protocol is followed and test termination occurs at the correct point, whether by elapsed time or total revolutions.

One of the benefits of the micro deval apparatus is it can handle more sample preparation capacity and lower sample quantities making it very efficient for laboratories and quality control departments. The steel frame, rubber covered rollers and integrated safety interlocks of the modern micro deval machine provides safe and reliable operation, a big improvement over the old European versions which had unguarded open rollers and different equipment design.

The test is recognized by major regulatory bodies such as ASTM, AASHTO and Canadian test methods and complies with Texas DOT requirements. This wide acceptance makes it a valuable tool in quality control and quality assurance. The results of the micro deval test is expressed as percentage loss which quantifies the resistance and durability of the aggregate sample. Low percentage loss means high resistance to abrasion and minimal degradation which is very important to ensure the longevity and performance of construction materials.

Besides the micro deval test, other abrasion tests such as Los Angeles abrasion test are also used to determine aggregate quality. But it has several advantages such as shorter testing time, smaller equipment and can detect subtle changes in aggregate properties such as abrasion loss due to handling or storage. This makes it a very useful tool to monitor aggregate quality, evaluate aggregate treatment and develop new materials with higher durability.

By following the micro deval test protocol and using the features of the micro deval machine, construction companies and laboratories can ensure their aggregates meet the highest standard for abrasion resistance and durability. This will reduce the risk of significant degradation in the field and contribute to the overall success of the construction project.
