A fibrous composite is laminated to the tough plastic sheeting, providing rigidity, proper load distribution, and protection of the machine platens. Composite material flows during compression to fill the irregularities in the concrete masonry unit, distributing test loads uniformly.
This method is comparable in accuracy to capping with hydrocal gypsum but is not noted in the ASTM C140 method.
