Important Guidelines for Extension Wires
- Thermocouples: The extension wire material must match the specific thermocouple type (e.g., Type K or Type J) being used in your application. This ensures the accuracy and integrity of the temperature measurement. If a transmitter is built into the thermocouple sensor assembly, standard copper wire is often used instead of thermocouple extension wire to transmit the scalable (4 to 20 mA) signal back to the control equipment.
- RTD Sensors: RTD sensors transmit a resistance signal that can be sent using standard copper instrumentation cable to the control, readout, or recording device. When a transmitter is included in the RTD sensor assembly, copper wire is typically used to send the scalable (4 to 20 mA) signal to the process control system.
