High-Low Detector (Rolling Straight Edge), 12 ft. (3.7m) Span

The High-Low Detector, also known as a rolling straight edge, is a specialized instrument designed for measuring the surface regularity of roads and similar structures. The rolling straight edge is used to measure planeness of pavement surfaces, such as highways, airport runways, bridge decks, etc. Thie rolling straight edge requires only one operator to detect, register, and dye mark high and low areas that need to be ground down or filled.

Operator of the rolling straight edge has full view of variations which are magnified 16 times, on a vertical scale graduated in 0.125” (1mm) increments, so that magnified readings range up to 0.25” (6.4mm), high or low.

The rolling straight edge frame is constructed of rectangular aluminum and wheels are provided, one front and one rear with precision ball bearings and neoprene tires for support. Scraper blades keep wheels clean to maximize accuracy. The rolling straight edge includes wheel stands for stabilizing during calibration, transport and storage. There is provision for checking wheel alignment in the rolling straight edge. A steering handle is provided for easy positioning and movement, and provides a button for dye discharge. The 16 ft. long model incorporates aluminum reinforcing riveted along both sides of the frame for added support and rigidity.

Marking dye is used to mark high and low areas on pavement. Dye can mount is designed for 12 oz. (340g) aerosol cans.

The High-Low Detector, also known as a Rolling Straight Edge, is a precision instrument designed to measure the planeness of pavement surfaces. The versatile rolling straight edge simulates a tool that is essential for detecting and marking high and low areas on various surfaces, including highways, airport runways, and bridge decks. The device features a rigid frame supported on rubber-tyred wheels arranged in two parallel rows, ensuring stability and accuracy. The vertical scale graduated in 0.125” (1mm) increments, allows for precise measurements, making it easy for a single operator to detect, register, and dye mark high and low areas efficiently.

How to Choose the Right High-Low Detector

When selecting a High-Low Detector, consider the following factors:

  • Span: Choose a span that suits your specific application, such as 12 ft. (3.7m) or 16 ft. (4.9m)

  • Frame Material: Opt for a device with a durable and lightweight frame material, such as rectangular aluminum

  • Wheels: Ensure the device has precision ball bearings and neoprene tires for accurate measurements

  • Scraper Blades: Look for a device with scraper blades to keep wheels clean and maximize accuracy

  • Wheel Stands: Select a device with wheel stands for stabilizing during calibration, transport, and storage

  • Dye Discharge: Consider a device with a dye discharge button for easy dye application

  • Marking Dye Capacity: Choose a device with a sufficient marking dye capacity, such as 12 oz. (340g) aerosol cans

By considering these factors, you can select the High-Low Detector that best meets your needs, ensuring precise and efficient measurement of pavement surfaces.
