Principle of Operation: The viscometer operates on the principle of capillary viscometry under vacuum. A fixed volume of liquid is drawn up through a precisely calibrated capillary tube by a controlled vacuum. The test measures the elapsed time for the liquid to flow between two marked points on the capillary. This time is then multiplied by the viscometer's calibration constant to calculate the absolute viscosity in poise (P). All tests are conducted at a standard temperature of 140°F (60°C) to ensure consistent and comparable results.

For accurate testing, a minimum sample of 3mL is required. The viscometer must be submerged in a constant temperature bath with a minimum depth of 7in (180mm) to maintain the specified test temperature.

The PT-111 model, Size 25, is specifically designed for a viscosity range of 42 to 800 poise, making it suitable for softer grades of asphalt.
