Gilson’s Type B Concrete Air Meter measures entrained air in fresh concrete. Kit includes: Calibration Vessel, Calibration Tubes, Tamping Rod, Aluminum Straightedge, Syringe for water, and Carrying Case with die-cut foam padding and operating instructions.
Pump has large, easy-grip handle to build pressure quickly and is shielded to keep dirt and water out of the piston area. Brass petcocks have stainless steel ball valves for accuracy and durability and vinyl-coated handles for comfortable opening and closing. Air meters have long-lasting stainless steel clamps that are adjustable and less expensive to replace. Heat-treated cast aluminum base has 1/4ft³ volume and can also be used for unit weight and yield determinations.

The Gilson Concrete Air Meter Kit is compatible with multiple test: pressure method, gravimetric method and volumetric method. The pressure method gives the same air content as the other two test methods when used on concrete with dense aggregates.

Product Description
ASTM C231 test method is a widely accepted standard for measuring air contents of freshly mixed concrete using the pressure method. This method is designed for concrete with relatively dense aggregate particles. By applying pressure to a concrete sample and then releasing it, the test measures the air content by watching the expansion and contraction of air bubbles in the sample. This ensures the air content is satisfactorily determined which is critical for concrete quality and durability.
One of the key aspects of the ASTM C231 test method is that it’s only for freshly mixed concrete, not hardened concrete. The test requires determining the aggregate correction factor which accounts for the difference in air content between the aggregate particles and the concrete matrix. This correction factor is critical for accurate measurements especially when dealing with dense aggregate particles.
Note: ASTM C231 test method is not applicable to concretes with lightweight aggregates, air-cooled blast-furnace slag or aggregates with high porosity.
