The United Scientific DSA001 Distillation Unit is the perfect tool for simple distillation experiments. This complete set has high quality borosilicate glass parts and glassware and all the hardware to do many experiments.

Includes 500ml round bottom distillation flask with side tube (still head) to funnel liquids during distillation. 300mm Graham condenser for cooling during distillation. 250ml Erlenmeyer flask, glass stopper, 6”x9” support stand with 24rod, swivel burette clamp, extension clamp, clamp holder and activity guide.

All parts are borosilicate glass. Everything you need to get up and running. Perfect for lab  site or educational site use for distillation experiments.

Note: United Scientific DSA001 Distillation Apparatus contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm. Use with caution.

Good tool for distillation experiments. Borosilicate glass parts and all hardware included. Great for lab site or educational site use.

Distillation Apparatus Components

A distillation apparatus has several key components to separate mixtures based on boiling points. The main components are:

  1. Boiling Flask: A round bottom flask to heat the mixture to produce vapor. The boiling flask is made of heat resistant material like borosilicate glass.

  2. Still Head: Connects the boiling flask to the condenser. Vapor passes through and is cooled. Still head has a thermometer support to monitor the vapor temperature.

  3. Condenser: A coiled tube around the vapor to cool it and condense it back into a liquid. Condenser is made of heat conductive material like glass or metal to transfer heat away from the vapor.

  4. Receiving Flask: A container to collect the condensed liquid. Often has a side arm or tube to collect the distillate. This flask is where the purified components of the mixture are gathered.

Types of Distillation Apparatus

There are several types of apparatus for different applications and distillation techniques. Some common types are:

  1. Simple Distillation Apparatus: Basic distillation setup for distillation experiments. Boiling flask, still head and condenser. For mixtures with big difference in boiling points.

  2. Short Path Distillation Apparatus: Specialized distillation setup for short path distillation. Short path between boiling flask and condenser. Minimizes distance vapor has to travel and reduces material loss. Great for purifying small quantities of sensitive compounds.

  3. Fractional Distillation Apparatus: Distillation setup for fractional distillation. Has a fractionating column. Allows to separate mixtures into its components based on boiling points. For more complex separations where components have close boiling points.

Safety

When using distillation apparatus, always take necessary precautions for yourself and others. Some safety considerations are:

  1. Handling Hot Equipment: Always handle hot equipment with care. Use heat resistant gloves or tongs to avoid burns. Especially when dealing with boiling flasks and other hot parts.

  2. Protecting Against Chemical Exposure: Wear gloves and goggles to prevent chemical and solvent exposure. Be safe with your skin and eyes from harmful substances that make you unable to function.

  3. Ventilation: Ensure good ventilation in the work area to prevent flammable vapors from accumulating. Good ventilation reduces the risk of inhaling toxic fumes and fire hazards.

  4. Follow Procedure: Always follow procedure and protocol when setting up and operating apparatus to avoid accidents and to have successful distillation experiments. Following the guidelines will keep the work area safe and efficient.

By following these safety measures you will be safe and others will be safe too.
